Bills to the amount of $4,204.17 were allowed at the Monday night meeting, which included the cost of the new numn. $1,825, , With the advent of August a new period of moving and readjustment seems to have commenced in McHenry. Some very notable changes took jflace this week when three of the well known and popular Ixisiness firms of this city changed their location for the first time since they engaged in -business here several years ago. The oldest one of these business houses is the general grocery and dry goods store under the name of Smith Brothers. They established their firm in the TJ. Walsh building where they remained .until their removal to one of the stores in the Walter E. Carey NiiiiUag just romplntert across the street. The next store space which is about the same size as that of Smith Bros., will be occupied by the McGee clothing store. Hie basement of the Csrey building will be occupied by a recreation hall unfer the management of Earl Monear ;and Emil Geier. FORTY YEARS AGO ; (Taken from the files erf July 29, :i«7) • The lotus beds at Grass Lake, internationally famous, are '.reported to be in excellent shape and about ready to break into bloom in another week. 'Hie buds, which are growing rapidly, are more numerous than ever although the huge, lemon colored flowers will be a little later than usual this year probably due to the high water. At the height of the lotus season a Lotus festival will be held at Fox Lake and Grass Lake, nlanned by business and professional men of Fox Lake as a publicity stunt to advertise tiie popular lake region. Believe it or not, Leo Stilling, pro at the McHenry Country club, had the thrill of a lifetime late Friday afternoon when he realized the dream of all golfers and coined a hole-in-one oO the eighteenth green at the Country club. If that isn't a grand finale to nine holes of golf then we can't think of anything that is. Since Friday an epidemic of holes-in-one seem to have struck the club with Sonny Johnson making an ace on the ninth hole Wednesday morning, and Emil simon just missed an ace on the ninth Tuesday evening. His ball rimmed the cup, but failed to drop in, making it a two for Emil. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 7, 1952) A kind Providence provided McHenry with one of the most ideal days one could wish for on Marine day, with an estimated 14,000 visitors crowding into the city. A bright sun encouraged record crowds to gather on the walks throughout the city to watch the long and colorful parade. Never has Queen Charlene Dowe looked lovelier than Saturday night when she was crowned in an impressive ceremony at the Legion home, surrounded by her court of five pretty girls, Phyllis Smith, Joan Nett, Ann Smith, Shirley Pechous and Joan Schmaling. Volunteer workers selling "Add a Brick" tags for the benefit of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County on Marine day are to be congratulated for their splendid work. A total of $712.07 was collected throughout the day. Of this amount $126.09 will be credited to taggers from other com munities who were invited to take part. After this, plus ex penses incurred are deducted, it is expected that more than $525 will remain as McHenryTs contribution to the hospital building. Two boat fires provided work for McHenry's volunteer fire department this week. Drivers of both boats were thrown into the Fox river but neither was badly injured TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 3. 1987) A smiling Claudia Gray placed a new crown on the head of Mariaimette Schmit, in the judging to determine the 1967 titleholder at the Kiwanis- sponsored Little Miss Peanut contest held at the Legion home. She is the 7'/i-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Schmit of Lakemoor. Within a period of a few weeks, McHenry will be welcoming its fifth American Field Service foreign exchange student arriving here to complete his senior year in high school. He is Francisco Mar tinez of Panama, who will spend the year with the Melvin J. Moeling family, 4614 N. Pioneer road, McHenry. Francisco, better known as Frank, is from the city of Chitre, province of Herrera, the oldest in a family of six children, three girls and three boys. His father is a fanner and businessman. Entries are closed and pairings are all set for a field of 120 women golfers for the sixth annual 36 hole medal play tournament to be held on Aug. 3 -and 4 at the McHenry Country club, according to entrant chairman. Mary Killinger of Deerpath Golf club. Julia Kralowetz of McHenry is the tournament chairman and Mrs. Paulette Markoff of Glencoe is co-chairmao.
