League Not to be forgotten, amidst toe excitement created by toe Senior division winning the Woodstock tournament, were the results of some very im­ portant league games, with Dan's Food Mart making an impressive move into the top spot in the Ponytail league (ages 13-15). Dan's Food Mart won three games to leapfrog over McHenry Trophy and Adams Enterprises into first place with a 7-2 mark. McHenry Trophy lost two of three games during the same period, while the week was a complete washout for Adams Enterprises, which dropped all three games it played. The week was also an im­ portant v one for Adams Radiator, which won its first game of the season, 16-5, over Enterprises. The other team in th^ Ponytail league, McHenry State Bank, won two of three games and remains in fourth place. Radiator started off the week giving a preview of better things to come by losing to Dan's Food Mart 9-8. The closeness of the score between the best team and worst team in the league reflects the amazing balance in team strength which has been achieved. Radiator then came back to earn that coveted first win, downing Adams Enterprises 16- 5. Vicky Kopsell hit a home run for the winners, and teammate Kelly Ludwig sparkled in the field from her shortstop position. Meanwhile, the Food Mart was continuing its first place surge. After barely defeating Radiator, the Food Mart roughed up Enterprises 20-5. Jenny Prust was 5-for-5 for the winners, and teammates Renae De Rosier and Ann De Rosier added a homer and triple respectively. The Food Mart then com­ pleted a successful week, knocking McHenry Trophy out of first place with a 19-9 win. Earlier, Trophy defeated McHenry State Bank 13-6, despite three consecutive home runs by the losers. Julie Glosson, Tina Harwood, and Linda Aim turned the trick for St. Bank, but it wasn't enough. Sue Smith of the Trophy was injured when hit by a ground ball on the final play of the game, but recovered in time to throw out the batter at first base for the final out. Tracy Wirtz homered for Trophy in the victory. In the rematch later in the week, State Bank defeated Trophy 23-8, with Terri Bohlman hitting a home run. Kathy Sabatka made a fine play in the field for St. Bank to end the contest. State Bank also downed Enterprises 21-12, with Mary Foley hitting her first home run of the season. In Junior division play (ages 8-10), the Beauty Box ended a perfect 12-0 season, downing Buss Ford 22-7 and Globe Sales 23-4. The champions were awesome throughout the year, having just one close game. Never was the Beauty Box power more evident that in the victory over Buss Ford. The winners hit several home runs in the lopsided contest, without round-trippers being hit by Monique Betancour Annette Freels, Dana Verdung, Melissa Greve, and Cindy Kinsala. Riverside S.A.C. clinched second place in the league, toppling Buss Ford 25-9. Two teams of all-stars in each division, Junior, Senior, and Ponytail, will compete against one another. What is certain is that the 1977 McHenry*. Pigtail league Senior division all-stars are going to be a very difficult act to follow in years to come, having swept four games to claim first (dace in the recent Woodstock Invitational Double Elimination tournament. It was the first time,a McHenry girls team par­ ticipated in a tournament against teams from other cities, and after overcoming a bad 'case of the jitters in the opening contest, the local girls were never really challenged. For their efforts, the Pigtail league received a team trophy, and each of the all-star players was awarded individual trophies. Besides McHenry, teams from Dundee, Woodstock, Algonquin, Cary, and Lake in the Hills entered the tourney, with McHenry winning the championship by blanking Woodstock 15-0. Winning the championship must have been the furthest thing from the local girls' minds during their opening round game, for they trailed Dundee 10-4 going into the final inning. A bad case of nerves, ac­ companied by tentative play, combined to put McHenry badly behind going into the final inning of the opening round contest. Then, in the seventh inning, the local girls pounded out eight runs, and right about then the players, coaches, and large group of followers, must have started to believe that maybe this tournament would be something special. s McHenry held Dundee to ju< one run in the bottom of th seventh to win 12-11 and ac vance in the winners bracket The next opponent wai Algonquin, and again McHenr] won, this time 9-5, to move intd the semifinal round in th<| winners bracket. In doublj elimination play, it takes twe defeats to eliminate any teai from the tournament. In the semifinal round McHenry faced Woodstock for the first time, and rallied from a 5-4 deficit, to win 13-5, and advance to the championship game. After defeating Woodstock 13-5, McHenry was the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament. When Woodstock eliminated the other teams, McHenry and Wood stock met for the title However, since Woodstock had already lost one game, it would have to defeat McHenry twict to claim the title. As the final score, 15-0, in­ dicates, a second game was not needed. McHenry exploded for five runs in the first inning and was never headed. The local girls rapped out numerous hits, and made spectacular plays in the field to walk away with the first place trophy. Winning a tournament the first try is certainly a credit to the players and the coaches. But, persons connected with the Pigtail league agree that it is also a positive reflection on all „ players in the Senior division of the Pigtail league. Seven McHenry County Farm Bureau Softball teams begin the quest for state honors in the Illinois Farm Sports Festival Wednesday at an all- day District I tournament. Forty-six Softball teams from 14 counties will vie in seven classes at the District tourney in DeKalb, with the class winners advancing to the state finals Aug. 4-5 at Bloomington. Through the years McHenry county teams have been strong contenders, frequently winning or finishing among the finalists in Young Adult, 35'ers, and Slow Pitch classes. Last year the McHenry county 4-H team won the state title in one of the rriost highly competitive classes-Boys' 4-H. That team will begin defense of its state crown at 9 km. on July 27, facing Whiteside county. Twelve teams \are entered in this class. The McHenry County Farm Bureau 35-ers Slow Pitch team cap­ tured the state title last year, but after one season of trying this class the Sports Festival committee discontinued it because of too few entries. However, the McHenry county 35'ers " will be strengthened this season since some of the Slow Pitch 35'ers will be returning to the long- established fast pitch 35'ers squad. McHenry county faces Whiteside and the winner advances to the state finals. The tourney will be held at four sites in DeKalb during an all-day flurry of activity. Alden Kilian, District I executive secretory for the Illinois Agricultural Association, is chairman for this tourney. The teams will come from the northern tier of counties in the state, extending from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan.
