That the question is one of vital interest to the large territory affected was evident by the large crowd in attendance and the several talks that were made. Many protests are* being made to save the famous lotus beds in Grass Lake by building no more dams. The great lotus fields are a priceless asset to this territory- The McHenry Grays were the victors in a hard fought game last Sunday, winning by a 10 to 9 score. Bohr of the Grays fanned eleven men. Durren- berger made nine take the strike-out route. * The second nine holes of the McHenry Country club 18-hole golf course was unofficially opened for play on Sunday, July 14. While the regular greens of the new 9-hole course are not quite ready for play, the temporary greens and fairways were considered to be in very good condition for so new a course and it goes wihtout saying that all club members and guests who played the full 18-hole course for the first time are wonderfully pleased with the present condition and they foresee that this promises to be one of the most attractive and snappy courses in this territory. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 29, 1937) Old-Age pension checks for 450 McHenry county residents have been held up this month as officials awaited a federal Social Security board ruling from Washington in relation to administration of the pension law in Illinois. Usually the checks for McHenry county pensioners, which total $7,706, are received the first week'of the month. Tax Assessor Schmitt of McHenry township recently turned in his books to the county treasurer and the Dersonal property list was published in last week's issue of the Plaindealer. The board of review is in session at the court house at Woodstock and it is stated that about seventy-five complaints have been registered. This will probably increase rapidly after tax lists are published. The final day for filing complaints is Aug. 2. It has been learned that "Oscar" the $1,300 prize pickerel that was released six weeks ago in Fox Lake, had wandered through Pistakee Lake into the Bay where he was caught by a Chicago fisherman, Sunday. The lucky fisherman was John D. Mueller of Chicago, who spends his weekends at the lakes and bay. .^TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 7, 1952) The City Council met Monday evening anticipating a routine meeting of paying bills and approving reports, but found a long list of probelms that carried the meeting up to the midnight hour. Chuck Miller and Attorney William Carroll, Jr., were again present and presented new plans for a subdivision which was for- KNIRMSQlWC the professional do-it-yourself carpet cleaning spegk Vi Day As Follows: HALF DAY Mon. thru Thurs. The owners plan to petition for annexation of this subdivision to the city of McHenry. The Council was encouraged by the report on parking meters for the month of July. Total collections reached a new high of $937.57 for the current year, although the amount was below the figure for the same period in 1951, when $995.51 was collected. A one-day finance drive oh Wednesday, Aug. 20, will be held in McHenry for the Blackhawk Area council, Boy Scouts of America. Money raised will be turned over to the local council treasury to extend the Scouting program in the communities which it serves. The fight is up in those Shamrocks as they see hopes of getting into the play-offs in the county league. Last Sunday they went up to Richmond and won a 84o 3 ball game that put them in a tie for fourth place in the league standings. It was "Sonny" Miller of the McHenry Millers, who took the lead in beating the Richmond Millers. "Sonny" pitched a 6-hitter besides batting in the clean-up spot and contributing a lusty double in the offense depart ment. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Aug. 3, 1967) Some of the finest sales ever offered in local stores are promised area shoppers when Dollar Days are held this Thursday, Friday and Satur day, Aug. 3, 4 and 5. The city Council of McHenry is pleased to receive word that a request for a special federal census has been approved and will be taken during this month. A federal census is taken every ten years, the last one in 1960. It is hoped that all parsons in McHenry will cooperate to the fullest with those calling at their homes to complete census reDorts since the final results should prove most beneficial to the city. One big benefit to be derived is in Motor Fuel tax which is allotted on a per capita basis. The newest promotion of the McHenry Chamber of Com merce, discussed by the Retail committee in meeting last Wednesday, is the back-to- school Marathon days to be held in August. In connection with the annual mid-west guitar marathon at Shay's Music World, a contest will be held among many McHenry businesses, when merchants will be offering hundreds of dollars in prizes. The public may register at participating establishments, guessing just how long this year's marathon will last Miss Lois Hansen, 17-year- old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hansen of Wonder Lake, added the second title to her collection in 1967 when she was selected as Miss Wonder Lake last Saturday evening during the annual firemen's carnival. Last spring she was also named prom queen at McHenry high school, where she will be a senior this fall. LICENSE DEADLINE Alan J. Dixon, Secretary of State, has reminded vehicle owners that the deadline for displaying 1976-77 fiscal year license plates is midnight, Friday, July 29. "This date ends the extension from June 30 on fiscal year plates," Dixon said.
