I SERVICE NEWS | Seaman Barnes Cruises Aboard "Floating Gty" Navy Storekeeper Seaman Victor N. Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard T. Barnes of 4005 Grand, McHenry, recently returned from an extended deployment in the Mediterranean sea. He - is serving as a crewmember aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy, homeported in Norfolk, Va. While deployed, his ship operated as a unit of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. During the six-month cruise, he and his shipmates par ticipated in several training exercises with other Sixth Fleet ! units and with ships of allied nations. During extensive flight operations, the Kennedy recorded its 100,000th carrier landing by an F-14 "Tomcat" jet aircraft. His ship was the first U.S. aircraft carrier to visit Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia and the first U.S. carrier since 1947 to visit Alexandria, Egypt. Ad ditionally, he had the op portunity to visit Naples, Italy and the Spanish cities of Malaga, Barcelona and Rota, plus the Spanish resort island of Mallorca. His ship is more than 1,000 feet long, displaces 87,800 tons and carries a crew of 4,950 officers and enlisted men, including those assigned to an attack air wing. She is virtually a "floating city" and can ac commodate ninety-five air craft. A 1975 graduate of McHenry West campus high school, he joined the Navy in June, 1975. • Sgt. Andersen Receives Air Force Promotion Leroy P. Andersen, son of Mrs. Selma Anderson of 3308 W. Elm, McHenry, has been promoted to senior master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.
