PAGE 9 • PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17. 1977 Keepin' Healthy Jv • • I As many of you know, the -federal government has passed 3aws that set standards for the 3flammability of general ^wearing apparel, carpets and -rugs, mattresses and children's ^sleepwear. ' •* Do you also know the ^meaning of "flame-retardant ;fabric?" Flame retardant does 3not mean burn proof. Flame- iTetardafft fabrics will burn. "Flame retardant" means that flhe fabric is able to resist ^burning better than ordinary •fabrics. Since not all clothing is made :©f flame-retardant fabric, the Illinois Department of Public Health has some suggestions , you should keep in mind when purchasing garments that are not flame retardant. First, consider the weave and the weight of the fabric. Tightly woven heavy fabrics will ignite less easily and burn more slowly than sheer, lightweight, .loosely woven fabrics. For "example, fabric such as broadcloth (in shirts) is lightweight and burns rapidly. On the other hand, fabric such as denim (in jeans) is more tightly woven, heavier and will not burn as rapidly. Secondly, consider the surface finish. Napped fabric (such as flannel) with air spaces between the loose fibers, will ignite much faster th&n a smooth-surfaced material (such as denim.) Third...piled fabric. A fluffy high pile will burn faster than a close-knit, low pile. It's also a good idea to con sider design when you're buying clothing that is not flame retardant. Tailored or close-fitting garments are less likely to be ignited than loose- fitting garments. When wearing loose-fitting clothing...garments with bell- type sleeves, ruffles and trims; loose-fitting blouses (especially maternity tops); or long gowns, especially nightgowns...be especially careful around stoves, fireplaces, space heaters, candles or other sources of ignition. These types of garments can easily catch fire when you stand near or reach across a lighted burner or candle; when you reach for an object over the stove; or try to warm yourself at a fireplace or heater. The state healUylepartment recommends that, whenever possible, you purchase flame- retardant garments. One thing to keep in mind, however, is to read carefully, and follow exactly the laun dering instructions for flame retardant fabrics. Laundering instructions may be complex, but if you do not follow them, the flame resistance can be lost after a number of washings. You should also be aware that the warning "Do not use soaps" does not mean you should not use detergents. Soaps (as opposed to detergents) will leave a fatty deposit which will build up on the fabric and result in a loss of flame resistance. If you want more information concerning flame-retardant fabrics, contact your local health department, or write to Illinois Department of Public Health, Consumer Product Safety, 535 West Jefferson, Springfield, 111., 62761. I TURN ONS YMCA Men's Club Will Sponsor Circus Aug. 20 * rrs NOT too HARD TOTELL A WOMAN'S AGE. IT'S MOT TO) SMART, EITHER. Hagan Wallace - Sells & Gray Combined circus, a big 3-ring under-canvas show, is coming to Crystal Lake under the sponsorship of the Lake Region YMCA Men's club on Saturday, Aug. 20. There will be performances at 2:30and 7 p.m. The tents will be located at the Lake Region YMCA grounds An advance sale of circus tickets, at reduced prices, is now in progress throughout the area by YMCA members. The funds raised by the circus project will be devoted to the civic and charitable activities of the organization. For many years the Hagan & Wallace circus and the Sells & Gray circus toured America as separate shows. Now they have been combined into one larger circus with "the many features of the two organizations plus many new attractions. Arena stars from around the world have been recruited for this inaugural tour of the new big circus. From Hungary comes the Karolvs, top bare-back riding troupe; from Spam the Estrada Family of teeter-board artists; from South America the An tonio Trio, amazing feats high atop a balancing pole; from the Middle East comes the Great Sampian, outstanding dexterity in the juggling art; Miss Mimi Zerbini, French queen of the high trapeze; Evy and Mark with their educated high school horses; Miss Marie France and her canine revue and Bonnie and Clyde with their unusual concert. Other features include Capt. Helmut Meier and his per forming elephants; a dazzling aerial ballet high in the big top and the laugh provoking antics of the circus clowns. Pineapple Salad Spoon drained pineapple chunks on crisp greens. Top with sour cream; garnish with chop ped candied ginger. Better Bet? "Dad," asked the youngster, "which can go faster, horses or buses?" "Buses, of course," was the impatient reply. "Then why don't you bet on buses," inquired the observant tot. r . spurgeon's ' 'V A SI •BK wm 385-4520 BEAUTY SALON THURS. Ftl.
