An additional $2,000 is still to be raised, as no steps will be taken toward the purchase of a new truck until sufficient cash is on hand to make payment in full. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of August 19, 1937) ' . The summer vacation days bring considerable activity at Pistakee Bay, where the social season is a busy one, with an attempt to crowd many events into the two short months. The Pistakee Yacht club is the scene of gaiety every Saturday - night from the Fourth of July ! weekend to the close of the ; season Sept. 4 with the Bowery • ball. Probably the outstanding : social event of the season is the : Commodore's ball, which was ; held this year on July 24. Atthis- • party Commodore and Mrs. ; J.J. O'Connor wore honored ; and the Commodore presented • to each lady a rhinestone clip. • Robot O'Connor and Dorothy ; Ericsson distributed the favors ; during the grand march. There was a lion on the : streets of McHenry Friday, but it was well guarded in its cage, which was pulled behind an automobile and the old fellow seemed to be perfectly harm less. The animal's name was Jerry and he was used as an advertising stunt to remind the people of the Fox Lake Lotus festival. Donnie Schaefer answered Herb Reihansperger's letter in S.I.H. column, extolling the virtues of his favorite ball team, the White Sox. He ends his letter by saying, "There Always was and always will be Sox fans." TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 28, 1952) : Alertness on the part of the McHenry police was respon sible for the arrest last Saturday morning of three young men who had broken into the Hester service station west of the railroad tracks and made away with a radio and three gallons of oil. The night officer was making his rounds about 2:30 a.m. when he noticed two men sitting in a car parked in the driveway near the station. As he questioned them, a third man darted from behind the building and across the street. Unable to leave the two in the car, he was forced to let the third escape but took the others tp the city jail. The three were identified as Alvin Olsen and Richard Swiderski, of Chicago and James Carver of River Grove. When a contract was let with Suburban Oil company last week by the road and bridge committee of the county board, it was revealed that it will cost 123,626.85 to seal coat 18.4 miles of Blacktop roads in this county. The expense of the improvement will come from motor fuel tax money, the county having previously appropriated a certain amount for maintenance. Hie two McHenry teams got together last Sunday on the Shamrocks home grounds and the Shamrocks came out on top by the score of 10 to 0. Sonny Miller pitched a real ball game allowing only four hits while walking only one man. The Shamrocks will fight for play-off spot in Sunday and Labor Day games against Woodstock and Algonquin. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of August 24, 1967) The question of discipline procedures and dress codes for the forthcoming school year at M.C.H.S. occupied con- payments will be paid on the most f recently purchased ambulance truck. The squad's only source of revenue comes frbm proceeds of this annual event. Following the big question of selling Landmark school that has captured the interest of McHenry residents recently, a plan was presented to the City Council Monday night by Allan and Sam Leibsohn urging the city to purchase the property to combine with other property in die area to plan a shopping and off-street parking facility. The (dan would call for the city to sell to a developer. City, At torney John Looze pointed out what he terned mechanical problems and questioned the city's position of being an auction bidder, the plan of sale being specified by School District 15. So It Seems There are two periods when fishing is good at a summer resort--before you get there and after you leave. -Traifscriot. Boston. Rainstate Park Renamed By jamboree Scouters Doug Littlewood, chairman of the Merit Badge midway. Not far from the Merit Badge midway at Moraine State park, Pa., there's a tent for the exhibit and displays group. These tnep are charged, with making au the necessary signs for the many activities throughout the National Scout Jamboree. After five-and-a-half 1 inches of rain during a two-day period, tney made a new sign for the area around the Lbierty Bell on Merit Badge midway, "Camp More Rainstate Park". It proclaims: Merit Badge Mudway - Home of the Brown Sea. In an impromptu ceremony, Victor T. Ehre, chairman of the Exhibits and Displays com mittee, presented the sign to Kevin Kangas, Jamboree correspondent from McHenry, reports that, despite the weather, Troop 78 is getting along fine. Meals still get cooked and served on schedule, tents and beds have been made more rainproof and camp life goes on. The weather has, in fact, added a new dimension to the outdoor living experience and a lot has been learned that will be useful to the troops back home.
