BOYS -GIRLS' STATE REPORT - Marias Central Catholic high school's participants in the 1D77 Boys' State and Girls' State programs met recently with Principal Thomas J. Parsley to report on their conferences. Participants, from left, were Anthony McCormack and Donna Mensel of Woodstock, Principal Thomas J. Parsley, and Dirk Andreas and Joseph Huemann of Johnsburg. Boys' State and Girls' State programs are held annually to acquaint high school Juniors with the structure of statewide government. Much attention is also paid to the development of leadership potential. The students were selected by vote of the faculty. The meeting was held with Parsley to discuss activities at the summer programs and seek out ways that the participants could contribute some of their added experiences to class and school activities in the upcoming year. (PHOTO BY DeWANE) Recycling Drive Saturday BIBLE VERSE This Saturday, Aug. 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is the time set for McHenry's monthly third- Saturday Recycling drive at the McHenry Market Place parking lot. Members of the Wonder Lake Coast Guard auxiliary will be working along with the McHenry County Defenders by providing the labor on Saturday to unload cars and to take care of the bundled newspapers, clean bottles and flattened all- steel cans and all-alijkninum products that are brought in. Something new will be at tempted at the recycling drive this month. In addition to the regular paper truck, a second paper truck will be on hand to receive only the clean newspaper bundles, with no cardboard or magazines in cluded. Our first truck will be used for the mixed papers, magazines, and cardboard. The McHenry County Defenders are reminding recyclers that there will be a great deal of truck space 7 available, so if citizens plan to t * rid of bundles of newspapers, stacks ot magazines, or flattened card board bundles that have been sitting around for a long time, this is the month to do it. Please try to keep bundles of newspapers free of any magazines, plastic or card board. Citizens are reminded that bi metal cans cannot be recycled. They must be disposed of through regular trash removal. "fhe McHenry County Defenders encourage everyone to buy their beverages in returnable bottles. The cost per ounce is less and the en vironment benefits. Millions of gallons of oil are used daily in the production of the one-way throwaway containers. Anyone having questions regarding the recycling drive is asked to call the McHenry County Defenders represen tative Mrs.^Wm. This league meets at 9 a.m. Friday mornings at the Toxic Fumes Cause Death (Fifth in a series of articles op fire prevention and other emergencies written for your information by the firefighters of Co. 1, McHenry.) Like the forty-two persons who died in a Tennessee jail, millions of Americans face the threat of death from noxious fumes given off by any number of household items that burn easily. Put a match to the cushy throw pillows that decorate your sofa and the smoke could quickly kill you. Ignite any of the home fur nishings made of foam plastic or the insulation in your house or the decorative beams in Affipr living robm and the same trnng might happen. Or your mattress. In the jail fire, burning mattress padding made of polyurethane foam produced the fumes that quickly filled the Maury county jail in Columbia, Tenn. Items made of polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride are the most dangerous. So much so that the federal government is now studying what hannens to Crystal Lake Bowl on Route 170. Interested bowlers call 385- 1547. PAGE 5 -PLAINDEALER- WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 17, 1*77 wuh tne Small Homes council of the University of Illinois. Most residential building codes ignore this danger, Spies added. Unprotected polyurethane is being used less for insulation now, but is still used as padding in chairs, sofas and mattresses and in decorative items such as simulated wood beams. "It's a very good, com fortable foam but very dangerous if you set the thing on fire," Spies said* When polyurethane burns, hydrogen cyanide is given off. Polyvinyl chloride fires c?.i result in another dangerous gas, hydrogen chloride "If you get very highly toxic gases such as hydroget cyanide, it takes a very srnal amount to be lethal," said Dr Joseph E. Clark of the fire prevention administration. the two plastics when they burn. The danger from the fumes is the subject of studies being conducted by the National Fire Prevention and Control ad ministration. Polyurethane is best known as the soft, foamy filling in pillows and some mattresses. Polyvinyl chloride is harder, often used as a flexible covering. Dr. Merritt Birky of the fire prevention administration said these plastics are used ex tensively in upholstered fur niture, carpet padding'and the interiors of automobiles and airplanes. These plastics are also widely used in home insulation and furnishings said Henry Spies, an assistant professor DESTINY IS FORETOLD Collect your thoughts, distribute your ideas. then And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered everyone all these things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples. Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not; and they feared to ask him of that saying. St .
