Plasties have already taken over the job from steel or metal in a lot of secondary vehicles. \ AMF, for instance, is cell ing a riding lawn mower with a 1.5-gallon fuel tank made ot plastic. And the largest reg ular fuel tank turned out by Detroit--the 36-gallon mon ster on some Chrysler Core, trucks--is alto currently made of plastic. The material is also being used for fuel tanks in the new XM-1 battle tank, and in off-road motor cycles, where racers make the switch from production-line metal tanks themselves in or der to cut as much as 50 per cent from the weight of the part. Those uses right now add up to about 7,000 tons of ra^ plastic. Modem Plaatiea In* ternational estimates that the total will jump to 60,000 tons within 10 years, as more and more companies go to plastic fuel tanks to save both weight and money. Even that ton nage "would represent a little over half the market poten tial," the trade publication says. j Detroit observers expect Ford's Pintos and Mustangs to be among the 1979 cars with plastic fuel tanks, wita the part a strong possibility, too, for the Oldsmobile diesel. Big inroads in the truck fuel tank market depend on an okay for the product from the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety of the U.S. Depart ment of Transportation. At least two petitions for such an approval are now pending in Washington, and Mack and White Motors are among thp truck makers who say they may switch to plastic ga^ tanks once the bureaucrats (i» the go-ahead. Different plastics proeee* sors are promoting different techniques for forming the tanks, but most will probably be blow-molded: an update^ version of the way a glass* blower formed molten glas* For gas tanks, however, in stead of using air to expand the hunk of plastie, process^ ors may use a gas combining nitrogen and fkmrine. Be sides expanding the plastic, it makes it impermeable to ga# oline. *** --r <V- -VX All in the Family Room An abundance of "naturals,** hardwood and brick, create waimth and charm in this (pauly room. It meant a lot to me to know I had so many wonderful friends. Thank you all Kathryn Luing Verzwyvelt 6534 DumbartonApt. D SanBernardino, Calif 92404 . 7 What is now usually re ferred to as the family or game room has gone through quite a metamorphosis over the pas't few decades. Even the name has taken on a kind of dignity it-locked in former times. Initially, the room where the kids played and the grown-ups gathered fof fun and games was call ed the "rumpus room." The name suggests chaos and disorder, and, in most cases, the room lived up to the name. Eventually, the name was scrapped in favor of recrea- , tion, or "rec room." The "rec room" like the rum pus room" was usually rel egated to the basement and was characterized by a hodge-podge of cast off furniture that was too dis reputable to be used in any other room in the house. The leap from "rumpus" to "family" was a con siderable one. It was help ed along in large measure by today's miracle furniture and floor finishes that give us the luxury of good look ing interiors without .the nded for kid-glove treat ment. Hardwood furniture and floors can take all the rough treatment the kids can dish out; stain-resist ant fabrics eliminate the worry of all the spills and IBs that family rooms are heir to. ASID, of Greensboro, N.C., specializes in designing family rooms that are ver satile enough to suit the needs of every member of the household, individually and together. At first, it seems the only way to ac complish this is to divide the room up into small areas designed for specific activ ities. The designer's skill is- evident in pulling all these areas together in a harmonious unity that is at once inviting and function al. When well planned, the family room is set up for most activities without having to go through elabo rate shifting of furniture and equipment. Teenagers want to dance. There's no need to roll up the carpet; it's already up. Bare hardwood floors are very much in vogue and they're ideal for dancing feet. A game table, large e- nough to double as a dining or snack table,' should be left relatively clear So that it can readily accommodate a chess set, backgammon, cards or any table game. It's wise to inve&t a little extra to get a weli-con- structed solid table that will stand up to Hie use and abuse such tables are bound to get. An oak top is par ticularly good, although any of the hardwoods such as 1 - Designer Sandra Co wart, maple, birch, walnut. oak, will withstand a deal of use and will as good fifty years from noi as it does today. As a general rul thumb. Mrs. Cowart r« mends a minimum furniture in family She eliminates every that does not serve .a cific function. materials, such as wood i brick, add warmth #11 clutter. They are also vtl maintenance free-a nus in a room that much traffic as a room. ( Another hSlpAtl sui from Mrs. Cowart is a wall of built-in cabinets^ house books and games, space permits, allow double the cupboard space you think you'll need so there's room to accumulate /more books and games *8 taste dictates. The moduli units that can be purchase in pieces can work as as built-ins and will hold equally well if they made of hardwood. The vantage of these units built-ins is that they can moved, either from house house, or room to room. The real Joy of today* well appointed family is that it is practicall maintenance free. As Cowart points out, it be designed tor fun, games, not work and worry. agps v, K.'
