They can be used to control winter annual or cool-season weeds like downy brome, chickweed and yellow rocket. Princep SOW can be applied at one to one and one-half pounds an acre to pure stands of alfalfa established more than twelve months. Apply it after the last tyll cutting, but before the grouhd is frozen. . Sinbar also can be applied at one-half to one and one-half pounds per acre when alfalfa is dormant. Kerb can be used on either new plantings, past the first trifoliate, or in established stands during the fall. Use one to four pounds of Kerb 50W, depending on soils and weeds. The higher rate is used to suppress quackgrass and control mustards. Do not graze or harvest for forage within 120 days after treatment. Furlo Chloro IPC can be appleid to alfalfa during the fall and winter to control downy brome and chickweed. The rate is one to two quarts of the 4EC from October through January, and two to three quarts after Feb. 1. Do not apply within forty days of harvest. Premerge 3 can be used for chickweed control in pure stands of alfalfa and clover. Rates are one and one-half to two quarts per acre for new stands and one to one and one- half quarts for established stands. Do not graze or feed treated • forages to livestock within six weeks of application. Corn Rootworms Corn rootworm beetle populations are very high in corn fields in the northern half of the state, according to Don - Kuhlman, University of Illinois Extension entomologist. In fact, he adds, rootworm populations are the highest since the entomologists have been monitoring them. That means a potential for rootworm damage in those fields planted to corn next year, especially where there have been more than two beetles per plant this year. Virtually all fields of corn after corn in McHenry county will probably need treatment with a soil insecticide next year. Most soil insecticides fire controlling the rootworm, but if populations are overwhelming next summer, it could be hard to get control. By the way, if one had poor control of rootworms with soil insecticides this year, visit the office and talk about it and the information will be passed to the entomologist. They are trying to pinpoint some of the causes to reduce the problem next year. There is a form to be filled out and sent to Urbana. Meanwhile, do a couple of things next year to help reduce rootworm damage. Crop rotation is a must and is the most effective control method. Extremely early planting, mid-April, puts a lot of pressure on the soil insecticide, especially if there is a lot of rain and the egg-hatch is delayed. The insecticide just breaks down by the time the rootworms appear. Use a cultivator application, but keep in mind that dry and wet weather can hamper the treatment.
