DuPont Registered TM £ t o r e M E N IMMMKOH Bears Looked Bad In Loss, •But 1 Fan Went Home Happy! •• Saturday night when I went to bed, I prayed I would meet Wally Chambers. It didn't seem to be an unreasonable request. After all, I knew Wally (everyone calls him Wally) wasn't going to play Sunday against New Orleans, and he had to sit somewhere--so why not somewhere near where I was sitting so that I could go over and meet him? I wanted to meet Wally Chambers because he is my favorite Chicago Bear. He's my favorite Bear because: 1) He wears a gold earring, land I've always wanted to wear a gold earring, but I'm not 6-6, and-860 pounds so I can't get away with it; and 2) Bob Thomas, who used to be my favorite Bear, started missing extra points and field goals, and now nobody likes him. That's why Wally is my favorite player, and so I made sure I got to Soldier's field real early Sunday so I'd have a chance to find him. I peered around anxiously, fully expecting him to appear around the next corner. I saw Johnny Morris and Jeannie Morris (who incidentally looks better in person than on TV- Jeannie not Johnny), and a lot of sportswriters who everybody knows and a lot of sportswriters nobody knows. But I didn't see anybody wearing a gold earring-and no Wally. One of the nice things the Bears do is put nametags where each person is supposed to sit Finding mine was a job in itself. With one eye out at all times for Wally, I peered over the tags looking for the one that said "McHenry Plaindealer", with my name under it. Half an hour later I was still looking. There were spots for writers from all the famous papers, and spots for writers from all the not-so-famous papers, and there, right behind "Pro Football Weekly", and right next to "Dixon Telegraph", was McHenry Plaindealer. They didn't spell MY name right, but at least I had a seat Unfortunately, still no Wally, and the game was about to begin. Suddenly, Mr. Pro Football Weekly said, "There's Wally!" My head shot up in anticipation, and with ciy heart beating twice as fast as it should, I looked around to see- nobody. Apparently, Mr. Pro Football Weekly had asked, "WHERE'S Wally?" (Remind me to cancel my subscription to Pro Football Weekly). As everyone knows, the Bears were slaughtered Sunday, but as I recall, it was still close, 14-7 or something like that, when it happened. In walked my favorite Bear, earring and all, and sat in the seat "directly /behind me. WALLY CHAMBERS WAS SITTING DIRECTLY BEHIND ME. My mind racing wildly, and at the same time trying to remember that I am supposed to be a professional, I looked around me for help. "Won't someone please break the ice", I thought. No one did. In fact, throughout the remainder of the game, no one introduced himself to Wally. Rather, the other writers turned to him and commented on how the game was going. Wally (all the writers called him Wally so I figured it was alright for me to call him Wally, too) answered every question politely, although I imagined he was getting pretty tired of the same writer asking him one hundred and nine times, "Are you glad you're not going to have to be in the locker room after the game?" Then there was this one guy who inched up to Wally at halftime and started telling him about this fantastic surgeon who performed a miracle on this guy's knee twenty-five years ago. Wally, of course, wasn't playing because of a knee injury. Still, he's probably had hundreds of surgeons recommended to him. MCC Offers Workshop On Holiday Decorating How creative are you? Crystal Lake Road McHenry, III. 385-0420 and I couldn't believe he wanted to hear about another 'miracle' worker while the team that pays him his salary was getting killed on the field Yet Wally gave a polite response, and even said "thanks" to the gentleman. That Wally, he's got class. As for my own communication with him, it took me nearly an hour to think of what I thought was an intelligent question. So I mustered up all my nerve and inquired as to what specific things the Bears were doing wrong that they were losing so badly? As soon as I'd asked it I wanted to take it back. The question sounded so good in my mind, but came out so poorly, that I figured he must know for sure that I was a 'rookie' when it came to covering the Bears. Still, he gave a polite answer, mentioning the need to study the game films to determine exactly what was wrong. Pheu . that over, and having received the thrill of a lifetime, I focused my attention back to the game. Sure the Bears played poorly, and a lot of important people sitting around me were griping about what a lousv game it was. But for me, it was the best Bear game I'd ever seen. You know what? When I went to bed Sunday night, I prayed that I'd meet Wally Chambers again. I just want to tell him, "thanks"--and to find out where I can buy a gold earring.
