PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28. 1977 Marian Runs Saturday In Winnebago District Winnebago, the host school, is the team to beat Saturday when Marian Central's cross country team runs in the Class 'A' district meet. Winnebago is highly touted and one of the favorites to win the small school state cross country championship. However, don't sell the Hurricanes short. The five top finishers in the district meet, as well as the top five individuals not on a qualifying team, advance to the sectional round of competition leading to the state title. And if things go according to plan, coach Hans Rokus' Hurricanes will be near the top come Saturday afternoon and will qualify for the sectional. Certainly, Marian Central has the personnel to advance, including Darryl May of Johnsburg. May, only a junior, has been the top Marian . runner throughout the season, and is expected to be at or near the front of the pack when the runners reach the finishing chute Saturday. Besides May, Rokus also can count on Tom Hiller, another Johnsburg resident, who has been the No. 2 Hurricane runner when he hasn't been sidelined with illness. Mike Davis and Paul Sandall are other Hurricane runners capable of putting Marian high in the final team standings. Marian closed out its regular season last week with a third place finish in the West Suburban Catholic conference meet. Benet and Marmion, the only two WSCC schools to defeat the Hurricanes, finished ahead of them in the conference tourney. Marian finished the regular season with a fine 9-4 record. The Hurricanes have won their last four duel meets in a row and appear primed for a major effort in the state eliminations ahead. •/ '1.00 ALL SCATS *1.00 "R0LLERC0ASTER"» MON.-THURS. 7:30 FRI., SAT., SUM 7:00 A 9:30 .OUTDOOR I G R A Y S I A K E R T 1 2 0 & 8 3 2 2 3 8 1 5 5 » i- - ALS# Carhops WEEKENDS ONLY AT 7:30 Ftl.--SAT.--SUN i ADULTS $2.00 JOHN TRAVOLTA SISSY SPACER "CARRIE". Manager of Veterinary Services Norden Laboratories AN OVERBI NDANCE OF PETS "Do you want a puppy? We can't keep him, but we want him to have a good home." As our pet population climbs toward 80 million animals, primarily dogs and cats, this is a common refrain in neigh borhoods across the country. Apparently not all pet owners know 9bout the contraceptive techniques called spaying and neutering. ' Spaying is the surgical removal of a female's ovaries, or ovaries and uterus. Neutering is the surgical removal of the male's testicles. Spaying can be performed on a healthy female animal of any age, but recovery is most "rapid when the surgery is performed on an animal eight or nine months old. Males can be neutered when they are about a year old. Generally, dogs and cats are just approaching sexual maturity at these times. They have already received much of the benefit of the hormones produced by the reproductive organs, and will not lose their spirit after the surgery. When done by a veterinary surgeon, spaying and neutering are relatively simple operations. A general anesthetic is used so there is no pain, and very few animals show any signs of discomfort after the operation. Pet owners reluctant to alter their pets argue that removal of the reproductive' organs in creases weight gain and makes pets sluggish. This is not the case. If the surgery is per formed when the pet is very young, it may grow larger and have a quieter personality, but it will not be sluggish.. Pets become fat and lazy primarily through overfeeding and lack of exercise. In those instances where pets' do get fat after spaying or neutering, they are simply being fed too much. There are several ad vantages to owning a spayed or neutered pet: Both males and females center more of their attention on members of the family and do not wander away during heat periods. False pregnancies, ovarian tumors and other female medical problems are eliminated. Neutered males don't acquire the ripped ears and torn coat that come from competing for the attentions of a female. There is no disruption in training or performance of females used as Seeing Eye or guard dogs. Neutering male cats usually prevents their indiscriminate wetting inside the home. And of course, spaying and neutering help control the pet population problem. Last year animal shelter personnel had to destroy 14 million companion animals because there were no homes for them. To promote spaying and neutering of companion animals, some humane organizations are requiring all pets obtained through a shelter be spayed as a condiiton of adoption. Increasing numbers of pure-bred pet breeders also recommend the altering of any animal purchased for com panionship. rather than show purposes. And some cities are proposing highter license feet for unaltered pets. Half Mil l ion To Christmas Club Members More than a half million dollars in Christmas club checks will be mailed by the McHenry State bank Tuesday, Nov. 1, to more than 2,800 members. It will be good news to local merchants to learn that ac cording to surveys, about one- third of the amount saved is actually used for Christmas shopping and a similar amount is usually converted into a savings account. The remaining balance is normally used to pay bills or to make a down payment on a major purchase. It was in 1910 that the Christmas club originated. It now exceeds 2.1 billion dollars annually. More than 130 million savers had their first contact with banking through the Christmas club program. Each year the McHenry State bank Christmas club grows larger and the trend continues to be for early distribution of checks.
