The critical over population of dogs and cats in McHenry county has made cooperation between McHenry county animal welfare associations and the Animal Control center in Woodstock, a "must". For seven years Helping Paws struggled alone to protect and place pets within the county. This task was an overwhelming one and to help alleviate it, 2 years ago, HP contributed the sum of $5,000 toward the establishment of the Animal Control center. With a facility and land to handle animal problems one of Animal Control's jobs was to house strays until reclaimed by the owner, or adopted, and when neither was accomplished,. to put the animals to sleep by injections. However, Animal Co*troi does a lot more; they are responsible for wildlife control, rodent control, cruelty, This young Bolivian's enterprising teacher has turned bottle caps, wire and pieces of wood into an abacus for teaching basic math. UNICEF is helping to establish schools and train teachers and is providing basic school supplies in this most deprived South American country where school en rollment is less than SO percent. Funds collected in UNICEFs Halloween campaign will further this effort. 'UNICEF Photo bv Cerni) 1 ASSOCIATES 3937 W. MAIN ST. KcHENRY, ILL 385-7661 Mw MT. PROSPECT 09 S. Working with Animal Control HP assumes the responsibility of taking a photo of one of their more adoptable animals, and listing some of the others in their regular weekly newspaper columns. They follow up on each adoption by sending a HP representative to the home where the animal is placed and make available education material when needed. There are times when one point of information changes what seems a problem situation to a harmonious one. If the home is found unsuitable and requires further follow-up by Animal Control, it may become necessary to remove the dog from the home. With the formation last year of Pet Welfare Group, Inc., based in the town of McHenry, there is a division of respon sibility between the two agencies which lightens the burden for each. Both agencies assume identical adoption responsibilities; Pet Welfare covers adoptions made by residents of the town of McHenry and surrounding GET PROFESSIONAL carpet cleaning results!
