Each player participates a specified amount of time "so that each boy or girl has the opportunity to play competitive basketball under league conditions," said Phillip Baaske, Physical Director. During the season each player has an opportunity to judge his or her own game skills as well as personal growth, ability to play team basketball, respect for each other, the referees and the opposition. "In YBA, we teach respect for an opponent simply because if there is no opponent, there is no game," said Baaske. No players are "cut" or not allowed to "make" the team. When a boy or girl signs up for the YBA at the YMCA, they are automatically a member of a team. Parents or guardians are involved in league play as YBA Basketball Puts Emphasis On Participation, Having Fan it's a familiar scene. The door slams and Johhny runs to his room in tears. His tfeam just lost the championship Here he is. all of nine years old. and his world has come to an "end" because somebody struck out.. or dropped a pass . . or missed a free throw. That's why the professionals at the YMCA together with members of the NBA Players association developed YBA. ^ YBA basketball is different. In YBA basketball, the name of the game is values, par ticipation and fun Everybody plays. Sign-ups for the 1977-78 YBA season at the Lake Region YMCA starts November 5 at 7315 S. Route 31. volunteer coaches, team and league managers and in other capacities. Designed by the YMCA with help from the NBA Players Association, the concept was fully tested before play began two years ago. In the initial seasons there were more than 100,000 participants in about 400 YMCAs. "YBA was an instant and overwhelming success because too tmany kids had suffered through being told jflhey "weren't good enough" to play other sports or coaches wouldn't let marginal players have an opportunity. "In the YBA. we frankly don't think a 10 or 11-year old kid is emotionally ready to accept either the false adulation of a championship victory or the bitter sorrow of defeat. We think basketball is a fun game and it should be played that way," said Baaske. Girls will have their own league this year. Crystal Lake establishments sponsor this program. Information on registration, fees, adult volunteers and other facets of the YBA may be ob tained at the Lake Region YMCA. 459-4455. Marian's Cross Country- Team Heads For Peoria r Marian Central's varsity cross country team has qualified for the Class A state finals in Peoria this Saturday, by finishing fifth in the Kaneland Sectional meet. The Hurricanes, making their first trip ever downstate, were led to their fifth place finish by Darryl May Johnsburg, who finished fourth IVC * -oH E th. fi™ oei Unlike the Class AA sectional which found Deerfield running away with the title, the five qualifying teams in Kaneland were closely bunched. Marmion was the winner with 96 points, while Minooka had 108, University High of Chicago had 110, Winnebago had 115. and Marian Central had 116. Marian qualified easily, defeating sixth-place Walther Lutheran by 38 points. May had strong support from his teammates Saturday. Mike Davis. Tom Hiller. Paul San- dall. Mike Gallo, Ron Mauer, and Jesse Garcia all ran out standing races to assure a trip to Peoria. By qualifying for the state finals. Marian assured itself of ing no worse than the twentieth best cross country team in the state. Rest assured, however, that the Hurricanes will do better than last in Peoria. The Kaneland sectional is the toughest Class A sectional in the entire state, meaning that Marian should have a good chance to break into the top ten come Saturday. Mark Letoiri of University High was the individual winner Saturday, covering the three- mile course in 15:55. Between Letoiri and May were Tom Quenon of Minooka and an old nemesis of May, Tom Drendal of Burlington Central. May. and his teammates, will get one more crack at Drendal and the others Saturday morning at 10 a.m. And win or lose, this cross country season has been a memorable one for the Hurricanes. • o o o Farmers are now won dering what happened to alt the campaign pro mises.
