PAGE 11 - PI AINDFALER • WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER i. 1977 Conservation News... about McCullom Lake Something New The McCullom Lake Con servation club decided at a recent meeting to start a regular conservation club news column to keep club members, and the public aware of ac tivities of the club. If you have lake or conservation news items or suggestions you wish to have included, give us a call. Shop And Share For the dredge fund. The McCullom Lake conservation club is having "Shop And Share" days at a local food chain Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 15 and 16. The store will return a percentage of total sales, less sales tax, to the dredge fund. An identification card will be needed to participate. These cards and any other in formation can be obtained from Mrs. Charles (Joyce) Larson, Mrs. Edward (Harriet) Hammer or Mrs. John (Sharon) Gacek. To par ticipate, simply obtain a card, do your regular shopping, take the register tape and iden tification card, and present them at the service desk. Your sale will be recorded, and tape will be returned. The identification cards may be used in any area, or com munity. that has one of these food chain stores. If you have friends or relatives in. other communities, send them a card. The more people taking part, means more funds for the dredge. Nov. 15 and 16 are the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, so shop early and avoid the rush. Your help is needed, and will be most ap preciated. Cook Book For those of you who ordered cook books, and submitted recipes, we are still hopeful they will be ready to put under the Christmas tree. Dredging News The dredge is on the lake, just off West Shore Beach. If anyone has time to help with dredging, please contact Harold Bowlin, or Ed Hammer, or drive by if the dredge is in operation. Your help will be appreciated. At times the weather, or a break down may delay operations, so check in and keep the dredge in operation. Pledges Come on, folks, let's get those pledges in, this is your lake, and it takes money to pay the bills and keep the dredge in operation. If you did not receive a pledge form and letter please contact Mrs. Edward (Harriet) Hammer, she will be happy to give you one. If the lake program is to succeed we will need everyone's pledges, and participation. Conservation Meeting The next regular meeting of the McCullom Lake Con servation club will be Thur sday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Lakeland Park community house, 1717 Sunset. Anyone interested in McCullom Lake is encouraged to attend these meetings. They are open to the public. Your participation, suggestions and help are welcome. Mark The Calendar Sunday, Dec. 4, the Con servation club will hold another auction at the McCullom Lake Beach house. Start getting those old. new. and in between items together, (no clothing, or mattresses please). There will be pick-up service within a five mile radius. More details next time. The annual fishing derby, will be sometime in February. Date and more details will follow, when plans are finalized. Why not attend the next meeting and help plan this gala event? Mrs. Harold (Audis) Bowlin 4802 West Shore Drive Guide To Travel By Gojan Nikolich Cold weather shivers get a soothing boost during November and December as Illinois travel events unveil a schedule of everything from flower shows, feasts and fests to old time Yule celebrations staged in the prairie "out back." Weekend trippers can begin shedding their chills during the current Chrysanthemum show held Nov. 5-27 at the Garfield park and Lincoln park con servatories in Chicago. Gar field park's five-acre display area alone boasts over 150 varieties of home-grown buds and blossoms. Housed in the world's largest botanical houses, the show will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, Sundays and holidays. If you miss the magnificent mums of Chicago, Peoria's own version will be held Nov. 12-27 at the Glen Oak conservatory from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Over 6,000 flowers of every shape and size can be viewed. The rugged hills and bristling Ohio river valley bluffs of southern Illinois once again host this year's Pope county Deer festival held in Golconda Nov. 17-19. Heralding Illinois' hunting season, the backwoods bash includes hearty- food, en tertainment and a Deer Queen pageant. Housed under a billowing tent and attended , by thousands, the deer fest warns visitors to come hungry: last year's crowd gobbled up 325 pork shoulders.
