Well, until recently if a customer drove out of the garage and ripped his new treads on glass, for example, he could return to the store and get a new tire virtually free, paying only for mount ing and balancing. Since Jan. 1, though, most of the big tinmakere have eliminated this feature. But don't fret! AD of the air has not been taken out of tire warranties. Firestone's new piumgir tire warranty policy, for ex ample, expands the no-coat adjustment period for radial tires from the first 10 per cent of tread wear or 180 days of use (old policy) to the first 25 per cent of tread- wear or 12 months from pur chase, and mounting and balancing are provided at no cost. The new policy also provides for no-boat adjust ment of bias-belted and bias- ALEXANDER LUMBER CO. The no-cost adjustment policy for truck tires applies dur ing the first 10 per cent of treadwear, but mounting and balancing are not included. After the no-coat adjust ment periods, all types of passenger tires and light truck tires will be adjusted on a pro rata treadwear basis for conditions covered by the warranty. Adjustments under the warranty are made when a tire becomes unserviceable for reasons other than: 1) road hazard (a cut, snag, bruise, impact or puncture); 2) apparent improper in flation; 8) wheel misalign ment; 4) tire-wheel ssesmMy imbalance; 6) f by abuse, curbing, collision, racing, accident, fire, pro jection rub or vandalism; or 6) tread wearout. Except for a few vari ations, most big tiremakers' warranty poliey programs are the same. When you visit your local tire dealer or re tail outlet, ask to see the terms of the warranty, and don't be afraid to ask ques tions until you understand it. • • • Properly inflated tires can add five per cent to gasoline mileage because they roll easier, according to tire in dustry experts. That amounts to about an extra mile per GREAT IDEA FOR CHRISTMAS!!] * IN TUli * V t'Vv THE MCHENRY PLAINDEALER S E R V I N G T H E C H A I f S I - O - L A K 6 S R E G I O N S I N C E 1 6 7 5 W Bearcatting Mi'-aisrasrlio • wvaa roCt WITH THIS HCCE cxhjponM S MftMLS ALSO SPECIALS ON BEARCAT 8-149*1 BEARCAT 210-273 BEARCAT POCKET! |SGANNER-125"I WfTH Ml cmwu HHtRt NEEOEO WlthH Purchw EARCAT III, 8EA8CATJV • AND BEARCAT «• 2804 N. Correct tire preseure is necessary for safe driving, good tire mileage and re sponsive steering. Bast bet is to boy a good tire gauge and learn to uee it; air towers at service stations are fre quently incorrect. The correct amount ef air is the cheapest aerviee you can give a tire, and it will do the utmost toward ex tending its useful life. Undsr- inflation by 4 to 18 pounds can cut tread life by 10 to 40 per cent, says the National Tire Dealers and Rotioadeis Association. More than one out of four cars has at least one seriously underinflated tire (four pounds par square inch or more below the recommended normal inflation pressure for the vehicle), according to a U.S. Department of Com merce tire-use survey. Air towers at service sta tions are generally not accu rate. A motorist relying on a tower gauge will have only about 20 per cent chance of getting within plus or minus one pound per square inch of the inflation he or she wants. A single point cali bration of the tower gauge could decreass the error sub stantially. Check the air preeeure in your tires svery two or three weeks and before long tripe.
