& HELPING PAWS > ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P.O. Box 205 • Crystal Lake. Illinoit 60014 • (815)439-2641 by Ettolfo Atwell Now thai TLC (tender loving care) has been lavished on oar pathetic yellow Lab mix, she is a fine healthy dog. She is about 1ft years old and a beautiful golden color. Please call 338-5007. Humane societies have blueprints of what constitutes cruelty to animals because this is one of their big problems and they need guidelines to ac complish their job. But in dividuals see things their own way and may take a course of action that seems to be the best for themselves, not realizing how cruel they are. Dealing with the public Helping Paws workers have often found this to be the case. "•Recently a yellow Lab mix female was dumped at the side of the road. Next to her was a bag of dog food although she was obviously starved. Those who saw her dumped and took the license number of the car noted that its occupants were an elderly couple. Perhaps this elderly couple felt this was the only way they could solve their problem. uLet's- assume they were on itoeiaf Security and- barely making it for food themselves. Let's assume they tried to find a home for their dog and were unsuccessful. They may have called Animal Control and found that strays are taken in but a fee is charged for home- owned animals and they had no money. - Then they may have called Helping Paws. HP, being an unsheltered agency, places animals that are listed for adoption in foster homes. But if all foster homes were filled they could not accept the dog and would ask the couple to hold it while they listed her for adoption. However, this would not solve the immediacy of their problem and the dilemma remained. So they took the course of action that seemed to them to be the only solution. They may have justified their action by reasdning they had to do it. But the ' consensus of Animal Control authorities and of humane societies in general is that dumping a dog on a roadside, or anywhere, as a matter of fact, exposing that dog to all of the hazards that are present, is an undeniably cruel act. The gentle yellow Lab mix pictured is available for adoption.
