RIVERSIDE DR.. McHENRY Husband A Compulsive Liar Q. I've had a problem with my husband now for 10 years. He has seen twelve psychiatrists, and we have separated at least once a year. He has beaten me, as well as his ex-wife and children. Rut worst of all he is a compulsive liar and has a strong compulsion to please everyone but me and his family. Can you please help? The psychiatrist said no one can help him but himself. He lms lied since he was a child. Is it too late for him to change? A. It is never too late for anyone to change. But change cannot take (dace unless the individual really wants to become a different person. We have seen so many people find a new life through religious faith that we believe any human being can become a new persoa A suggestion might be that you try to bring your husband into contact with this personality improvement force by getting to know people who have themselves been changed. Incidentally, if you yourself have a vital faith it just might convey itself to him. We have a booklet, ThePower to Change Ydur Life, that has helped others with questions such as yours, and a copy of it is on its way to you. Anyone else wishing a free copy may receive one by writing to us at Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. Wife Doesn't Love Him Anymore- Q. Regarding your column to the person who wrote in about "doesn't love husband anymore," this sounds very definitely to be my wife. We are having difficulty, and there are two children involved. Myself,I do not want a divorce or separation I have seen a counselor but she refuses. I can't make her go, but running away is no way to have a happy life. I never thought the woman I love dearly with my heart would say, "I don't love you." But it happened. I don't believe that two people really stop loving each other, and God doesn't want any marriage broken. 1 would appreciate any suggestions. A. There are definite, practical ways to woo a woman. Some are kindness, doing nice, interesting things for her, telling her how beautiful she is, and just acting happy and pleasant. Make it exciting fa* her to be with you. Help make life interesting for this apparently dispirited wife. Recap how you got her to love you in the first place, and do all that over again. Try and be romantic like you once were. It works wonders. Father Doesn't Like Boy Friend Q. My father doesn't like my boy friend at all, and the thing is he's never even met him. He won't even give him a chance. My father says that my boy friend is lazy. I'm afraid to have my boy friend over because of what Dad has said he'd do to him. The only time me and my boy friend get to see each other is at school. What can I do to get my dad to at least meet him and give him a chance? If I don't find a solution soon I'm going to go crazy. A. It seems that your father has heard something about your boy friend even though he hasn't met him. Fathers often seem unreasonable when they are actually trying to save their children from heartache. Ask yourself if your father is opposed to just this boy, or to any boy. Talk with him about his reasons. Listen-really listen to what he has to say. If you know your boy friend is honest and decent and you like him, you can stand up to your father in a kindly but firm manner. If you make this effort to communicate, chances are you can bring your boy friend home without too much unpleasantness. If thereis something you would like to ask Dr. and Mrs. Peale to discuss in this column, write to them in care of Box 500, Pawling, NY 12564. If you would like to talk directly with a prayer partner, call Prayer line (212) 481-1050.
