STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Marian High '76 Graduate Winning Track Meet Honors Mary Marsh of Crystal Lake, a 1976 graduate of Marian Central Catholic high school, recently captured first place in a triangle cross country meet with Southern California, Stanford and the University of Arizona. Mary has competed as one of the top women on the track team for the University of Arizona and she will compete in the Utah Invitational Women's Cross Country meet later this month. Mary, a sophomore, will also be competing in the Spring for the women's track team and will be joined by her cousin, Mike Naifeh of Tuscon, Arizona on the men's track team. Mike will be running the half mile for the thinclads and Mary will be competing as a distance racer for the women's team. Mary is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marsh of Crystal Lake. by E. L. "Buck" Rogers I'd like to say a few kind words about piranha. There're the toothy little fish fea­ tured in James Bond movies and frowned on as aquarium compan­ ions for goldfish. The average piranha you've heard about is some seven inches long, has a body like a blue gill, a tinge of crimson around his throat, baleful-looking red eyes, and a set of dentures that would put Dracula to shame. Teddy Roosevelt called them "the scourge of the Amazon,"and reported that they could strip the flesh from a grown man in less than a minute. Other reports indicate that they're bloodthirsty little dev­ ils that devour everything that lives in the same element with them. They say piranhas are more danger­ ous than a white shark, a crocodile, a rabid wolf, or a neglected spouse. Well, only part of these claims are true. Before I made my first trip to the Amazon I called a Bran iff feller, who I figured oughta be an expert on piranha, and asked him some questions. "Can't help you," was the reply. "How come?" 1 asked. "You're supposed to render a service to your customers." "There's a limit to everything," he suggested, and I suppose he was right. Back in those days even A1 McClane didn't know anything about the subject. So I went to see for myself, and in the dozen or more expeditions I have made throughout the Amazon basin I've gotten fairly well ac­ quainted with this little fish. We speared a crocodile one time, and, before we could haul this struggling reptile on the bank, a school of piranha attacked and picked his bones clean. I estimated two minutes for this task. While fishing in a shallow land­ locked lake during the dry season. piranha attacked and devoured three out of four peacock bass we hooked. I Had a difficult time get­ ting enough fish for dinner that day, but the piranha dined well. Piranha are attracted by blood in the water and on occasions will at­ tack most wounded animals. But, I am also convinced that these fish are attracted just as readily by the vibrations of struggling or injured animals, just as sharks are. That's one side of the story. On the other hand, I have only heard of one account of a person being attacked by piranha, and I've seen thousands of kids swimming in piranha waters and women washing their clothes in the shallows. A large black piranha wrapped my line around a submerged tree once and broke off. Without hesitation, my guide took off his shirt and pants and dived down to retrieve the lure. He and most other Ama­ zon natives I have met do not fear the little fish at all. Of course, there are more than a dozen species of this fish, and only four are known to be dangerous. The rest are no more vicious than other piscatorial predators swim­ ming around in our waters, and I wanted you to be aware of this fact. Piranha aren't all bad, after all. If a fellow didn't conform to the rules, he was a Bolshevik. If he thought he was smarter than those around him, he was referred to as a certain kind. Stronger words. The Russians claimed the name, but the word spread. How come, Kathleen, that we never heard of a female in this country being referred to as a Bolshevik? Maybe it was a carry over from earlier days when little boys were made of "sticks and stones" etc. Little girls were made of sugar and spice and everything nice. That's what little girls were made of. Bet a lot of Boo-Birds who left the Bear game before the last ditch victory are sorry now. With the early score of 17-0 against the Bears, it looked like an afternoon better spent playing tiddle-de-winks or dominoes. One has to give credit to a team with enough behind the belt to stay in the fight and pull out a win with only three seconds left on the clock. So much criticism has been piled on the heads of the Bears and not all of it deserved. My long time friend Sib Whiting picked me up Friday morning and out we went to the American Legion Home where World War One Vets were honoring their deceased members and celebrating the anniversary of Armistice Day. Bernie Matchen was MC of the program and said all the right things at the right time. Bernie was high in his praise of the sophomore band from East Campus, mentioning that those young people had the day off from school, but took the time to take part in the program. Like everybody present, I felt real proud of Conductor Bill Toalson and his group of musicians. They have made great progress. She did it again! Shirley Smith lent her great voice in song. When she started with "My Buddy", the whole crowd was in the palm of her hand. And how she pleased those lovable Old Vets! It would be nice if more people showed their respect for the living Vets and the memory of those who have left this earth Of course, some people have valid reasons for not being able to attend. If a few more would take an hour out of their holiday next year, it would add to the spirit of the day. Writers warned that Clemson had a record this year equal to Notre Dame's. Most predicted a close game. Wow! It was close. Fumbles played a big part in the game. Let's not forget that ball carriers do not simply drop the ball. They get hit and hit hard. And tackles are made with the idea of knocking the ball loose. Met Henry Jackson shopping with his wife and actually acting like he was enjoying it. (I can't fake it that good). Lescher AUTOWORLD Br BRENT RUSSELL The federal government has decided that many high­ way traffic safety standards ought to be left to the states. This is an historic reversal for the U.S. Department of Transportation which for 10 years has been trying might­ ily to win uniform compliance with a multitude of stand­ ards. The result is likely to be a far happier partnership be­ tween state and federal traf­ fic authorities who have been at one another's throat since 1900 when a federal law gave DOT authority to impose uni­ form standards. States fail­ ing to comply were technical­ ly subject to reductions or cutoffs in federal funding for safety work ond new high­ way construction. These san­ ctions were seldom applied. In the new move, Transpor- tation Secretary Brock Adams has decided to scrap the 18 specific standards-- in subjects ranging from per­ iodic motor vehicle inspection to drunken driving--and re­ place them with just six broader standards. These standards will be mandatory in all states, but most states are using them anyway. According to Adams' orders, these standards cover rules of the road; driver lie- ' ensing; vehicle registration, titling and theft; traffic con­ trol devices; highway design, construction and mainten­ ance; and traffic records sys­ tems. It would be hard to argue that there is no need to stand­ ardise these functions since a failure to do so leads to driver confusion when state lines are crossed. It's a far different matter, however, to tell a state how to prosecute its drunken drivers. Actually, Adams tacitly admitted that there is practi­ cally no way to force states to comply with particularly ob- jectionable standards. For ex­ ample, motorcycle riders were so riled up when DOT tried to make states pass helmet laws, they went to work on state legislatures and the U.S. Con­ gress and had the ruling re­ versed. Periodic motor vehicle inspections, for example, can help keep unsafe clunkers off the nation's highways. It is recommended to all states. The general conclusion Ad­ ams reached is that while standards have been a reason­ able mechanism for structur­ ing a new program, contin­ uing them at this time can "stifle innovation" and they may even be counterproduc­ tive. The changes he spelled out are intended to place more reliance and state and local decision-making on what Ad­ ams calls "institutionalised common sense." . The Secretary's flexible ap­ proach is applauded. ?he fed­ eral highway safety program has been effective. In 1906, almost six Americans were killed on the nation's high­ ways for each 100 million miles of vehicle travel. Ten years later the fatality rate has been cut almost in half.
