INI NECESSARY Open Dating Open dating at A&P maans just that - clear, readable dates printed on the label that tell customers the last date the product will be sold. One of the most important consumer rights is the right to be informed. A&P's open dating policy which began in Jan. 1973 continues to help shoppers who are concerned about the freshness of the foods they buy. While several freshness codes are in use throughout the supermarket industry, A&P has consistently chosen the "sell by" date. Products are designed with built-in time for normal storage and use in the home, so even If a product is purchased on the "sell by" date the consumer knows the product can be used after that date and still be assured of good quali ty and freshness. A&P uses open dates for 95 percent of Its perishable and semi-perishable items including poultry, fish, meat (fresh and processed), bean coffee, baked goods, deli, dairy and refrigerated items. Look for our signs in the Meat Department which tell what the open date means. The labels read "Sell by Nov. 16" or "Sell by Nov. 16.1977." A few products carry the expiration date. It is intended to have the same meaning as the "sell by" date, and the label reads "Exp. Nov. 16." Open dating is one guide to food freshness, but proper handling and food storage temperature are equally important. Taking groceries home from the supermarket right away, rather than letting them sit in a warm car will maximize their freshness. Read labels for storage directions. Avoid storing any foods in warm places. For freshness - read the date before you buy.
