FIFTY YEARS AUU (Taken from the files of December 1, 1927) After six months of "saying nothing but sawing wood", Henry Ford yesterday an nounced the specifications of the new Ford car which suc ceeds his famous Model T. A bare listing of* those specifications presents a picture of an automobile that in performance, appearance and mechanical features has heretofore been associated with a considerably higher price class. Unusual speed and ac celeration are among the outstanding features of the new car. It is announced as being able to make fifty-five to sixty miles an hour, with ease. What is more important, it is stated that when travelling at such speeds, it holds the road easily, and with comfort to driver and passengers. There are six models of the new car. They are phaeton, roadster, sport coupe, coupe, Tudor sedan and Fordor . sedan. Knox Motor Sales are preparing for a public recep tion Friday, when models of the new line will be shown in photographs and charts. Dr. and Mrs. H. Floyd Cannon and family announce that they will leave McHenry Dec. 5 and take up their residence in Waukegan, where Dr. Cannon will enter into a partnership with Dr. Howard C. Hoag for the practice of medicine and surgery. An all-star boxing show that will bring together the cream of the amateur stars of Chicago will be served for the fans, who like their cards mixed with top notch boxers and knock-out stars at the Polly Prim tavern at McHenry on Dec. 7. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 2, 1937) This community was shocked Saturday morning to receive news of the sudden death of Dr. David G. Wells, which occurred at the Hollywood hospital in Hollywood, Calif., Nov. 26. The prominent McHenry doctor, who would have been 69 years old on Dec. 16, had been in California less than a week, arriving there on the previous Sunday with his son, Dr. Glenn W. Wells, whom he ac companied home after his visit here. The Alumni association of the McHenry high school was organized at a council meeting at the high school Sunday af ternoon when representatives were present from every class from 1931 to 1937 inclusive. Every graduate of the high school is eligible and invited to join the association and may now enroll by contacting anyone of the association's officers, who are Harold Lind say, president; Jack furvey, vice-president; Rita Freund, secretary; and Edward Mat thews, treasurer. New regulations and changes in the game and fish laws will prohibit those who fish through the ice from using more than one line, according to the changes made July 1, and that will be enforced after the start of the new year. The Yuletide season was opened in McHenry yesterday, Dec. 1, when the annual distribution .of Christmas savings at the West McHenry State bank was commenced. Approximately $6,250 is being mailed out to 155 members of the savings club, which is a slightly smaller amount than that of last year, but no doubt, it will be most welcome1 at this time of year coming as it does, in time for Christmas shopping. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 11, 1952) For some time the condition of the bridge on South Green street (Elgin road) has been of vital concern to the McHenry City Council. Especially since the erection of the new Edgebrook school has this concern been high on the list of necessary improvements. Temporary measures have been taken to safeguard the children walking to and from school, but permanent changes have had to wait for the lack of necessary funds. Ringwell Farm of Ringwood has again been awarded honors at the International Livestock snow held at Chicago last week. The 8-month-old heifer calf, Ringwell Orange Talisman, won the blue ribbon in a class of thirty-one entries. This same little animal went on to win junior grand champion of the entire Shorthorn female show. Ringwell Diane stood third in a class of thirty-three entries. The annual McHenry County Basketball tournament will be staged in the Richmond gymnasium this year and will open Saturday night of this week. McHenry - meets Woodstock in the first game. Charles M. May, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles May of the Spring Grove area, was recently admitted to the bar and is now practicing in McHenry and Lake counties. He was a graduate of Chicago Kent College of Law in June of this year with an LLB degree. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 6, 1967) One of the most important promotions of the McHenry Chamber of Commerce this year is in progress during the holiday season ahead. It promises to bring welcome cash gift certificates to the fortunate people who visit participating stores. There is nothing to buy. To take part, it is only necessary to visit one of the participating merchants, fill out a registration blank and deposit it in the box in that store. A large crowd of interested persons helped the McHenry Woman's club in the local observance of Illinois' sesquicentennial year last Sunday afternoon by attending a tea at the public library. The occasion was highlighted by the cutting of a beautiful decorated cake by Mayor Donald Doherty. On Dec. 16 the public will go to the polls to vote on referenda for School Districts 15 and 158. The former bond issue will provide the district with a middle school housing grades five through eight. The board of education has decided to go to a middle school organization, a breakdown into three nearly equal sections of kindergarten through fourth grade in the elementary building, fifth through eighth in the new middle school and ninth through twelfth in the high school. This building will be the first step toward the im plementation of that goal. T.L. "Cy" Young will be installed as commander of the Veterans of World War I, McHenry Barracks, at a meeting to be held at the Legion home on Thursday evening, Dec. 7. Salad Story Salads continue to make up a good portion of the American diet. According to some spe cialists, the average Ameri can eats about 23.6 pounds of let tuce and 15.7 pounds of apples each year. Also eaten per per son are 11.8 pounds of to matoes, 9 pounds of cabbage and 7.2 pounds of carrots. spurgeons This is the Week for Holiday Savings!
