Twice Told Tales of FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files December 1, 1927) "Do your Christmas Shop ping early and do it in McHenry" is the slogan which the merchants of this city have adopted and to prove that they mean business they have put before the people of this community in this issue of the Plaindealer several pages of advertising, telling of the hundreds of gifts which can be secured in the stores, where the goods will be found on display. Harry Helfogt, 27 years old, a cement worker, formerly employed by M.H. Dietrick at his plant south of McHenry was the victim of holdup men Wednesday night at he was driving between Mount Prospect and Arlington Heights. Mr. Helfogt now makes his home in McHenry, residing in a flat over the Huck grocery. He was on his way to work at Park Ridge when he was stopped by a car, from which three men emerged. They slashed his face with a razor, but were only able to rob him of $4. Among those from McHenry Who attended the Notre Dame and Southern California football game Saturday in Chicago were Misses Viola, Eva and Lillian Stilling, Leo Stilling, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 2, 1937) ,, Simon Stoffel, McHenry's oldest active business man and organizer of the Stoffel & Reihansperger Insurance company, was honored Tuesday, Nov. 30, at a dinner given by the Fidelity-Phenix Fire Insurance company of New York for his more than fifty years of service with the company. Mr. Stoffel became affiliated with the company in 1884, when he started soliciting insurance throughout this territory on a bicycle and during more than half a cen tury of progress his business grew and flourished, due probably to his untiring efforts and application to his work. Mr. Stoffel was presented with a Taylor Signal Stornioguide, the ideal weather forecaster. The Ihstrumenf had 'bleh ac curately checked with the " altitude at this location and bore the inscription," Presented to Simon Stoffel for more than fifty years of loyal service by the Fidelity Phenix Fire Insurance company". The local Community high school was the scene of the third annual reunion of the Class of '34 Saturday evening, Nov. 27, when twenty-six members of the class, with Supt. and Mrs. C.H. Duker, , assembled to enjoy the program planned by the * committee in charge of this » year's festivity. Bringing happy memories ot school days, the program for the evening was a novel one, giving evidence of original thought and well executed plans by the committee of which Lyle Franzen was chairman and Agnes Mis<;hke and Marian Anderson were members. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 11, 1952) Residents of Johnsburg gathered in their school hall on Monday evening of this week to hear plans for the formation of a rescue squad. Ken Hamsher called the meeting to order and in his introductory remarks stated, "The primary reason for the formation of a John sburg Rescue squad is to give the families of this entire area, the complete assurance of having an adequate inhalator and first aid squad who is properly trained and equipped to go into immediate actions, day or night, regardless of the nature of the emergency." The active rescue squad will consist of fiteen men. Ray McGee was one of the speakers at the twentieth an niversary meeting of the McHenry County Township Officials association at Har vard. Mr. McGee was first president of the county unit. An estimated seventy-five at tended from McHenry and surrounding counties. Again the MCHS Warriors basketball team showed a slow first half and strong finish as they were beaten 59 to 50 by Crystal Lake on our home floor last Friday. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of December 8, 1967) Parishioners of St. Mary's church heard William Malpede and the committee on dual enrollment discuss the possibility of enrolling St. Mary's school pupils dually in their own school and in the McHenry public schools. The committee is a task force of the education committee of St. Mary's school. Nativity Lutheran church at Wonder Lake this weekend celebrates its fifteenth an niversary. The event will be observed at a banquet Dec. 9 at the Legion home in McHenry. Rev. Burton W. Schroeder of Portland, Ore., will be guest speaker at the Sunday services. In recent weeks, new traffic signal lights have been put into operation in McHenry as the result of voter approval of a $35,000 bond issue in a special election Oct. 18. A contract was awarded to Aldridge Electric Co., low bidder. Last to be installed were lights at the Front street-Waukegan road- Elm street corner, with the purpose of aiding pedestrians in crossing. Halting of traffic is. expected to help those wishing to cross in the middle of the long stretch of road between the corner and Richmond road. The City Council previously considered designating a walk lane, but was informed that liability for possible injuries would rest with the city rather than the state. Signals at Green and Elm , Riverside drive and Elm and Richmond and Elm have been changed in com pliance with the "Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Memorial Hospital In Member Drive For '78 Membership strength and activity provide a significant foundation on which Memorial Hospital for McHenry County at Woodstock is able to assure outstanding health care for a large part of the population of McHenry county, Mrs. Virgil Smith said this week. Mrs. Smith, public relations chairman for the hospital's board of directors, made the comment as she announced the 1978 membership renewal and new-member drive for the Memorial Hospital for McHenry County association. The association provides the basis from which board members are chosen, the body that is the governing organization under direction of the membership. Board members elect of ficers each year following the annual meeting, held the fourth Tuesday of each January. The effort to obtain new members this year carries special significance because Memorial hospital is in the midst of evaluating a building program and space demands. The study is now under way with the help of the Peoria architectural firm of Phillips Swager associates.
