I 'AC.K ; - PI«VIM>K \I.I:H -1 KIDAV. dkckmkkk >, 1977 I & I | On The Sidelines •®^Cv'^-C ®|f Dlfk Rofcbltt A lot of water has passed over the dam since this column was last written in May. I sincerely appreciated the surprise dinner held by the McHenry coaching staff last June in honor of my retiring from coaching sophomore baseball. To clear the air on this matter I did not retire from teaching, only coaching. The desk set with the emblem of the bus given to me will always hold a spot dear to me. And speaking of buses, I wish to welcome Bill Blankenhorn back into the coaching fraternity, and may he have many and enjoyable bus trips this winter as he takes his sophomore basketball squad to places like Zion, North Chicago, and Lake Forest, just to name a few places. T « Bill returned to the coaching ranks in fine style. His :j:< sophomore cagers won the Kaneland«onphomore tourney £§ last weekend. Bill replaced the popular Gary Collins, who <i£ by the way will be jn the opposite corner tonight. Don't $ look twice at Crystal Lake, that big young fellow on the :£ Tiger bench will be the ex genial coach of the Warrior sophomore basketball team. Gary is now the chief assistant to John Swenson at Crystal Lake. We wish Gary all the luck except twice this season, that is when the Warriors square off against the Tigers. Our Warriors did themselves quite well over the past S weekend. Picking up the third place trophy at Sycamore was indeed a fine job. The Warriors are going to be an exciting team this year. Coach Ludwig can go to the bench any time and will not be hurt. This has got to be a good feeling for the veteran coach, - $ and he is looking forward to the coming season. Coach Marty Sobczak of the "Rassling Warriors" $ likewise is looking forward to a successful season, as his grapplers should be in contention all the way. A couple of new rules in basketball for you fans. Probably the most important rule change, is that when a player is injured, he will be given an extended time out. In previous years, the team was assessed a time out after a (Hie minute delay, and that was a costly time out if it $ occurred early in either half. § The other change is, that when a player tips a ball at the aid of a given period, and has possession at the time of the tip, If the ball enters the basket, it will be counted. In previous years, it did not count. Flack is heard around the state in regards to the football playoffs. Some suggestions are to start the season one week earlier. If you watched on T.V. last Friday and Saturday, weather conditions were not perfect. One doesn't always expect ideal conditions, but to play for the state championship under those conditions is not fair to the teams involved. The attendance for the final 5 A championship game was less than 4,500 fans. I wonder what the I.H.S.A. would say if the finals for basketball in $ the Assembly hall totaled less than 5,000 in attendance. With girls' athletics coming into full swing, we will try and keep the young lassies on the sport page. Sandy Fleming, swimming coach, and Pam Schaffer, the basketball coach, two excellent coaches will provide the necessary leadership for our gals at McHenry high. Belated congratulations to Coach Guda and ms fine golf team, and to "Hutch" and his Cross Country team and to Mike Burmann for his showing this year in cross country. The golfers took third in the state, and Mike as an individual made a fine showing in the state meet in ?:•: Peoria. :j:j Don't forget the wrestlers host Crystal Lake tonight, and the basketball team will travel to Tiger town. Starting times for both is 6:30 p.m. % Frosh Win 42 To 39 Over Marengo Five ft: I ?:* W I 1 I >:• § J: f £ £ -1 I I i . f i t q < l o t l f t d * n i ; i ^ Eigbjt Warrior freshmen ..broke into the scoring column Monday as the local frosh squad won their first game of the season. Unless the stain is removed, a yellow, hard-to- remove stain may appear later through aging or the application of heat. • • • • • • • • • • ATHLETES AWAY ANDY OAKI.EY Andy Oakley helped pull Northwestern university from the Big Ten cellar by placing 44 in the Big Ten Cross Country Championships at Purdue university on Nov. 5. Oakley, who finished second for Northwestern, covered the hilly 8.000-meter course in 2(»: 10. His strong finish enabled N.U. to clinch eighth place in the conference by upsetting Michigan state and Purdue. This is the first time in five years that N.U. has not finished iast in the Big Ten The Big Ton is one of the three roughest track con ferences in the nation." N l Coach Don Amidei said. "We're the only cross country team in the conference without any scholarship athletes. And since we have no seniors on the team i Oakley is a sophomore >. we won't lose anybody lor next year We've got a shot at third place next year " In* further competition, Oakley took third place in the Midwest Amateur Athletic I'nion Championships on Nov. 19.
