From Florida comes this letter: November 28,1977 Dear Earl: The first McHenry, Illinois Day in Florida was held November 19,1977 at Anderson , Park, Tarpon Springs, Fla., with 85 former McHenry residents in attendance. Mr. and Mrs. William Pries of Indian Rocks Beach and Mr. and Mrs. William Creutz of ' Holiday, Fla., were instigators for the first reunion which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The hours were from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all enjoyed lunch, visiting and renewing old acquaintances. Invitations had been extended to ap­ proximately 150 McHenryites and everyone is 'hoping for a much largo- turnout at the next get together which will be held April 8,1978from 12 to 4 p.m. at the same place. Also October 7, 1978 is the third reunion. The couple traveling the most miles to attend was Mr. and Mrs. George Gray of Punta Gorda, Fla., formerly of Worthmore Estates. The couple with the most grandchildren was Walter and Peggy Carey of Treasure Island, Fla., formerly with Carey Electric. The oldest McHenryite was Gordon Stringer former coach with the M.C.H.S. and now from Holiday, Fla. Many McHenryrites had pictures and clippings from the McHenry Plaindealer and the entire group was most enthusiastic-' whether they were from the past or present issues. Remember one time when "Red" Winkel played baseball with an older group of ball players representing McHenry. 'Twas a mighty good team and the sports with cash made some big bets each game. Somebody reported "Red" to be a paid player so Stringer sought the truth from me. My answer was, "Oh, no, Mr. Stringer. He is just a young kid on that team. They wouldn't pay him." If they had ruled Winkel ineligible for our basketball team, we might as well have folded our tents and turned to basket weaving. The last day of school (our senior year) Coach Stringer reminded me of my "truthful" answer and said, "I knew you were a d-- liar, but I was glad to hear what you told me." It is easy for me to ramble on so let me just say it is a real pleasure to hear from you and about McHenry Day. Try to get a clear picture for me the next time you meet. Sincerely, S.I.H. Abe Gibron's much herladed defense gave the Chicago Bears The Marian Central sophomore basketball team is off to an excellent start this season, according to Sophomore Coach Tom Blenner, who states, "This year's problems are the same as last year - we're too short!" Hie biggest man on Marian's team is Bob Sleconich, six- footer, who has done an ex­ cellent job on defense while averaging 11 points for the first three games. Marian's for­ wards are small but are turning in fine performances. Brian Caufield is the team's leading scorer at this point, scoring 16 points a game and the other forward, Mike Di Pirro, is also doing a fine job defensively as well, scoring 10 points per game. Marian's depth is really at the guard position with Tom Balchunas and Mike Sharp both averaging ten points a game. Marty Krenger, Bob Burg, and Mike Davis fill in and provide good bench strength. The front line replacements are Todd Huemann, Chris Reckamp and Chris Doyle. Rounding out the rest of the team are Chris Juzwik, Bob Weltzien and Ron Waytula. In their season opener, the Sophomore Hurricane's balanced attack and pressing defense paved the way to a 55- 49 win over Harvard. Blenner noted that "defense ran the game at Harvard, allowing them only 9 free throw at­ tempts." Crystal Lake Pins Down The Wrestling Warriors 43-18 The McHenry high "Hassling Warriors" lost to a tough Crystal Lake team Friday night by the score of 43 to 18. Tim Oakley won on a pin, and Jeff Hurckes and Bruce Brda each won on a decision. Randy Zimmerman and Jon Ortman each tied their match. The young a bit trouble before they came through with a 10-0 win at Tampa Sunday. And, who can begrudge Bart Starr and his Packers a win over Detroit. It was a squeaker, but a win just the same. Some men went Christmas shopping with their wives Sunday while the Bear game was on TV. The men wanted to watch the game. The little women wanted to shop. So they compromised and went shopping. To set an all-time "new", The Holy Terrors lost their last game by 311 pins and didn't get a prize. Doing her own record setting M. Teuber rolled an amazing high game of 222 (with her eyes closed) and E. Rogers got 185; E. E. Rogers (517) M. Teuber X488), and S. Blume (488) were women's high series. The men were "pn", too, as R. Justen went wild and roUed a 224 & a 211 while J. Gallagher'put in a 207 for high game. R. Justen (630), W. Coari (562), and M. Holm (544) shared men's high series. The only split picked off this week was the 7-4-9 by M. Teuber (again?) With total pins of 2418 the D&D's earned the pizza...en joy! Since it was position bowl, things really got turned around...it was possible to win 3 points and go down in the standings. LOCKED UP - but Warrior Jon Ortman gets up as he attempts a switch in his 105 pound match against Bartels of Crystal Lake. The even fought match ended in a 0-0 tie as Ortman holds a 4-1-1 record to date. This Friday the Warriors travel to Crown. McHenry Squeaked past Woodstock 34 to 32 and lost to Harvard in a close 24 to 27 match. The Warriors are now 3 and 3 so far for this new season. As usual, injuries and illnesses are taking their toll on this otherwise fine squad. A disputed -technical disqualification in Rivera's 145 pound match hurt McHenry in the Woodstock dual. Coach Sobczak's wrestlers earned three pins to Woodstock's two. In the Harvard match the Warriors forfeited in two weight categories while Har­ vard forfeited one. Bruce Brda at 112 pounds claimed the only McHenry pin against Harvard. Tim Oakley has now in­ creased his season record to five wins, no losses and one tie. He also has the quickest pin for McHenry so far this season, pinning his Woodstock op­ ponent in 24 seconds. This ties the quick pin record for McHenry high school set by Matt Schuster three years ago.
