Warriors In Doubleheader Weekend CHEERS-SHOUTS-PRAYERS were delayed on the faces of the McHenry cheerleaders when Warrior wrestler Tim Oakley was on the mat attempting to avoid a pin in the 138 pound match Tuesday at West campus. . , The encouragement helped as Oakley (left photo) avoided the pin and locked up his Larkin By Dick Rabbitt Coach Ken Ludwig's McHenry high Warriors open the home season Friday when they take on the Crown Vikings. The Vikings of Jim Hinkle are a vastly improved team from the past two years. Last year the Vikes were 0 and 16 in the North Suburban and 2 and 21 overall. At this stage in the season they are 2 and 2 the same as the Warriors. Led by senior guard Jerry Howell, an All Con ference and All Area selection this year, the Vikings start 4 lettermen and a 6*4" freshman. Last weekend the Vikings lost to North Chicago 84 to 58 in their conference opener, but came back strong on Saturday to defeat cross town rival Dundee. , The Warriors have been working all week on getting their offense into gear. Last Friday night they managed only 40 points in a losing cause to Crystal Lake, and while the defense did a fine job, the boys just couldn't seem to get the ball into the hoop. Tomorrow night the Warriors travel to Fox Lake to take on the Grant Bulldogs. The Bulldogs under Coach Tom Maple are off to a slow start with a 1 and 4 record. There are no lettermen returning to Coach Maple this season, and he is spending his time in the early stages of the season to try and get the right combination. Nevertheless when these two teams meet it is always a battle and tomorrow night's game will be no different from games in the past years. "I'm going home and dust off the old ones," was her comment. Receiving a letter on Dec. 1, which was postmarked in Moline, Ill.,*on Oct. 18, made me wish I still had my pony. I'd start an express line. As if it isn't cold enough in these parts, the weathermen are joined' by newscasters to remind us the wind chill factor is 28 degrees below zero. There are some things to say about the old days when we hadn't heard of a virus, wind chill and people with expertise. Howard Phalin writes an interesting letter from Lauderdale-By-The-Sea in Florida. Howard's sister, Marjorie Mahoney, sent him a clipping recalling our bob sled ride to Crystal Lake to play basket ball Our mention that it took McHenry players all night to thaw out brought Howard's comment that, "It took me several years." He also recalls that it took all night to get back to McHenry and the horses were so tired they needed special care for a week. He also reminds that the bob sled ride was in December 1920- -57 years ago. A part I had forgotten about the ride was the entertainment. "Do you remember Coach Basinger and Muggsy Wattles singing to keep us warm? That I forgot-*liose veto* were worth forgetting. jkmmaL&f Thanks for the letter, Howard And, thanks for the memories. Don't worry about the White Sox having players as long as Bill Veeck, the modern day Trader Horn, is at the helm. Now Bobby Bonds isn't so sure he wants to play ball in Chicago. Too cold. Veeck may have to build a heated cubicle in the dugout for Bonds. You simply have to humor the star athletes of today. If we didn't know Christmas was a-commin', the McHenry Choral club program last weekend was enough to awaken us to the fact. There must be something about that talented group when they can pull me away from Lawrence Welk on Sunday night. Met a lady recently who was shopping, but not carrying any packages. After being attracted to some fancy looking Christmas decorations, she looked at the price. Jeff McNish and Bob Zeller combined for 15 pts in the final frame to pace the Warriors in the thrilling finish. Montini's only loss came at the hands of Round Lake in overtime 56-54. Half way through the conference season Montini is in second place behind Round Lake with a record of 6-0. Montini is led by Mike Sabatka and John Huff who are able to bring the ball down court and set up<the plays. On defense these two hassle the opponents with their quick speed and ability to steal the ball. Scott Truckenbrod, Bill Herrmann, and Scott Larsen always seem to come up with the necessary rebound or make the needed basket. When Montini needs support from the bench, Mr. Tom Les turns to Charlie Wegener, Jim McDonough, or Jerry Balchunas, who are readily available to assist in making the team win. Montini's 7th grade basketball team, led by Tim Truckenbrod and Ed Kennedy, has a 5-1 record in conference. Montini's only loss came at the hands of Richmond.
