Replace broken or worn parts and plug lights in to see that all lights work, he adds. Buy or select only lights and repair parts that are weatherproof and clearly identified for outdoor use, Use (The Plaindealer invites the public to use this column as an expression of their view on subjects of general interest in our community. Tom Hanahan on the Jim Biedle show. "Senator Schaffer and Rep. Hanahan spoke out on their opposition of Fox Lake plan ning to discharge 24 million gallons a day of waste into the Fox River at its mouth at Pistakee Lake in McHenry county without the people of McHenry County having anything to say about it. "This 24 million gallons a day is only the beginning, called Phase I. Phase II, III, IV are to double, triple and quadruple these amounts daily. "It was pointed out that Fox Lake has more favorable alternatives which include land sites, which would be govern ment supervised and federally funded for 85 percent of the costs. But, they are trying to do it the cheapest way, which is pennywise and dollar foolish in the long run. "The devastation that faces the people of McHenry, Cary, Fox River Grove, Algonquin, and the other cities all the way to the Illinois river is another repeat of what happened to the Chicago river, DesPlaines rWer and DuPage county's Salt Creek, with the so-called treated sewage. There are stakes in the water with health warnings not to touch or come in contact with the water, just as you would see on an acid vat. "It looks like the end of the Fox River unless the thousands of people affected by this do not sit back and allow other cities, rubber gaskets in light sockets and hang sockets downward to keep out water and snow. Cover all electrical connections with layers of plastic film, sealing ends with-r tape. Alwayis disconnect power before replacing bulbs or working on lighting, says Hogsett. Avoid running wire through door or window openings*where it can be crushed or stepped on. However, if you must run wire to an indoor electrical outlet, drill a hole in a board that fits counties and upper state planning committees to dictate as to what is best for them. "Contact Richard Klemm and the McHenry County Board of Commissioners and let's have McHenry win. "JoAnn Britt, ,, "President of Pistakee Terrace" * a a a Excessive drinking often stems from a lack of interest in hobbies or home projects. the window opening, insert wire through the hole and close the window tightly on the board. Hogsett suggests using in sulated staples-not nails-when fastening electrical cords or string sets to wood or hard- board surfaces. To secure lights to house eaves use drive rings. Drive rings are available at many hardware stores. As a safety precaution, turn off outside lights when away from home, concludes Hogsett. vyy hav« a meo weakand. now flHi. Xfy !ZV&Sti&r Can you tell by the nature of winter rainfall whether a cold or warm front is passing in above 'you? Yes, there are clues which will enable you to know, most of the time, whether winter rain is being caused by a cold or warm front. If the rain is hard and comes on suddenly and wind indicates a fast- moving front, chances are ex cellent that a cold front is moving over you. These fronts move faster, the leading (precipitation) edge passes above in less time and cold, clear weather usually follows. If the rain is steady and dull and lasts a day or more, with winds moderate or almost non-existent, a warm front is probably passing in above you. This means several hun dred miles of stratus cloud, and a lengthly spell of mois ture, quite probably. The cruelest lies are often told in silence. ^ -R. L. Stevenson. Select Fresh Tree A fresh Christmas tree could have been cut in October. If properly cared for, it can maintain its freshness. Dave Plocher, University of Illinois Extension adviser, offers some tips in identifying a fresh Christmas tree. Cutting your own tree is the safest way to determine freshness, but not everyone knows about or can get to a cut- your-own plantation. The next best thing, Bolin says, is to buy from a reliable dealer. Ask him when the trees were cut and delivered to the lot. Check trees yourself to determine their freshness. Look for needles that are pliable and firmly attached to the twigs. If the needles are brittle or tend to snap or shatter when bent, the tree probably is very dry. In extremely cold weather, however, even needles on a fresh tree will become brittle. Smell it, to see if It has a fresh, pungent fragrance. Look at it to see if it has a waxy, natural green ap pearance, provided it was not sprayed with a colorant. Shake it to see if a lot of green jieedlesjall oHhe tree. If they do. chances are the tree is dry. The length of time a tree stays fresh depends on several factors. But proper selection and care should result in a tree that can be displayed safely in the home for at least two weeks. « • « » Hard, steady work, not brilliance, usually brings in the green stuff. o o o a Most people think they are pretty smart so why not agree with them?
