The law now requires that VA obtain an annual income statement from veterans seeking reimbursement for tcavel to obtain treatment for n on service - connected ail ments. VA has waived this requirement for claimants 65 years or older or those receiving disability com pensation. Still eligible for full cost-of- travel reimbursement are veterans who have been awarded compensation for service-connected disabilities. Those who do not have a service-connected disability may be reimbursed for no more than the actual cost of travel if VA determines that they are unable to afford the mode of transportation needed in their special circumstances. One whose medical condition would permit him to travel by public transportation, for example, might be expected to pay for his own travel, while a person with the same income might be reimbursed if special travel arrangements - such as an ambulance -- were required. Ability to pay is judged on the basis of income in relation to the number of members in the family and the type of tran sportation needed. The current annual limits on income run from as low as $2,800 for an individual with no dependents who could travel by public transportation to as high as $11,999 for a veteran with more than six members in his family who requires transportation by ambulance. Chairperson Named Gov Thompson has named Rebecca Schneiderman. a 37- year-old Chicago lawyer, as chairman of the Illinois In dustrial Commission. As c o m m i s s i o n c h a i r m a n , Ms Schneiderman will serve both as chief judicial and chief administrative officer of the agency which will handle about 60,000 workmen's com pensation cases this year. Her annual salary will be $32,000. A-l HEARING AID REPAIR SERVICE Frae Loaners-Complete Service on all Makes Custom Earmolds-30 Day Trial on New Aids. Home at Highview, Dec. 7. SCOUT NEWS PACK 162 Den 4 of McHenry Cub Scout Pack 162 held its annual Christmas party Monday, Dec. 12. The boys enjoyed games and treats and the highlight of the party was a handmade Mexican pinata. The traditional Mexican Christmas pinata was created by Eric Dippon, a Scout in Den 4 and his grandmother. It was filled with candy and gum and the boys took turns swinging at it while blindfolded. The lucky Scout to finally break the pinata was Jay Duplesys and the treats were shared by all. Also enjoying the party were Brian Beardsley, Patrick Miller, Donnie Neubauer, Steve Weinberg, Sam Merkel and Eric Dippon. The boys are anxiously awaiting the Dec. 30 Pack night Christmas party at the American Legion hall when the Pinewood derby cars will be distributed. W0RKWISE Questions And Answers For the past several winters, my son has made some extra spending money by shoveling sidewalks and driveways around the neighborhood when it snows. Someone told- me the other day that since my son is only IS years old, he cannot legally work, and that when he turns 14, he must then get a work permit to shovel mow for the neighbors. Is this true? No. The information your friend gave you is wrong. As long as your son limits his snow shoveling endeavors to private residences, he need not wait until* age 14, iter must he get a work permit to do this when he reaches the age of 14. However, he may not work for any business establishments shoveling snow until he is 14 years of age and gets a work permit form his local public high school or the county superintendent of schools. Now that the end of the year is here, it is almost time to file my income tax statements. I collected unemployment in surance for a couple of months this past year when I was between jobs. Do I have to declare the money I received from unemployment insurance on my tax forms as taxable income? No. Money collected under unemployment insurance is tax-free -- you don't have to pay any state or federal income taxes an any unemployment insurance benefits that you may have collected during the jear.
