BREE ANTHONY HAVE A HAPPY HOLIDAY By Dick Rabbitt The Gordon Tech Rams of the Chicago Catholic league, and defending Elgin champions, defeated the Warriors 65 to 56 Tuesday afternoon. The game was played in the spacious Elgin high school fieldhouse. The Rams, the 6th rated team in the Chicago area, and I among many will question their rating, had to struggle to defeat the underdog Warriors. The Rams jumped, out into an early lead, but at the 3:45 mark of the initial period Doug Oeffling tied it up with a 15 footer 10 apiece. Reinboldt tied it again, at 12 all, and Oeffling came back two minutes later and sank another 15 footer to again bring the score to 16 all, when Copeland's basket for the Rams put them ahead 18 to 16 at the end of the period. Reinboldt, Oeffling and Scott Dixon kept the Warriors in the game the first period. The second period saw the Rams playing excellent defense, and our Warriors not being able to get the good shot, and the two fine guards of the Rams, Copeland and Scott kept hitting the long ones to put the Rains ahead at the in termission 36 to 28. After the intermission the Warriors looked like a new ball club, committing only 2 fouls, and keeping the turnovers down from the previous two quarters, they gradually pek- ced away at the Ram lead and pulled to • within four, before Copeland hit his only basket of the quarter to put the Rams ahead 48 to 42 going into the final period. Jeff Partenheimer playing both ends of the court came up with 3 baskets and several rebounds, and along with Dixon had the Warriors on their way. - In the final period the Warriors did not close the gap to anymore ,than the six that they were down beginning the period. However, it was only in the last minute that the Rams had the game safely tucked away for the win. The Warriors showed vast improvement. True they had many turnovers, but Jeff Partenheimer mixed it up with the big boys from the city and came away with some rebounds, that he had not been getting earlier in the season. He also found the basket to the tune of 16 pts to lead the Warriors. The Warriors were not awed by the refutation of the defending champs. They gave them all they had down to the final gun. They still had trouble breaking the press, but we give the Rams credit for having a good defense, and their quickness gave them a lot of opportunities to score. A1 Reinboldt had 11 pts, and Scott Dixon with 5 long ones came on with 10 pts to aid the Warrior cause. Both Doug Oeffling and Bear Paulsen had 8 in the losing cause. The Warriors will have played the loser of the Barrington-Mundelein game on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Results of that game will be in Wednesday's edition. EARL WALSH Yes, dear readers, there is a Santa Claus. I didn't see him, but he fcas there. Jim and Irene were Mr. and Mrs. Santa as we enjoyed what seemed like^'Qld Home Week" at the Longhorn Friday night. Met so many people whom we knew that small town greetings were in order. We liked it. Jerry Miller, another Mr. Cub. left a package at our door. Opened it and found a pair of white socks with red and blue stripes, marked "genuine Cub colors". Must try those socks on for size. If they fit, watch for me walking down the street holding up my pant legs. I mmm • Entering the Fox Hole just before Christmas, the juke box was playing the Easter Parade. Evo was on duty that night. The annual gift exchange party at the Plaindealer plant was another fun time. • . m, Such a crowd! There are forty people on the staff. And to think hwas one of four who got out the weekly forty years ago. We must have worked hard. Mary Miller received a plaque that read: Bookkeepers never die, They just lose their balance. Verna Schmitt, a former neighbor, came to our door with a group of carolers and brought us holiday cheer. Whether we like it or not, the Dallas Cowboys separated the men from the boys in their game with the Bears. The Bears deserve a lot of credit for hanging in there to SPORTS EDITOR make the playoffs. Next year they should be a better team. It was a happy day for the Bears and their families when they picked up an extra $5000 for getting into the playoffs. Many of those players are not in the select millionaire club. Even the good die young. Dorothy Hettermann, one of the nicest persons I have ever known, was called from this earth last week. Her smile will brighten heaven. NEW, YEAR RESOLUTIONS: To shop early for Christmas gifts. To greet people with "Good Morning" no matter what the weather may be. To find a faster way to drive home from Comiskey Park than heading north on the Dan Ryan. (Must consult Joe Etten. The street he doesn't know hasn't been built yet), i To reduce. (I did. Then came the holiday season). To avoid anyone who maliciously downgrades others. To bring some happiness to at least one person every day. To feed the birds. To enlarge our garden from 4x4 to 4x6. Not to tell the same old yarns over and over. (They say it is a sign of old age). To finish writing my book. (Don't look for a publication). Just having fun. So we say goodbye to 1977 with all its high spots and low spots. The world moves on and we move into 1978 with sincere good wishes for peace, good health and well being for all. HAPPY NEW YEAR! With the Rockford schools now competing again, the regional wUl have the same format as several years ago. Hononegah of Rockton, Belvidere, Woodstock, and the Warriors will compete. At the present all four team* are suffering losing seasons, and unless a turnabout takes place there is not going tojto any standing room only at Buckner Gym. The state basketball series is the money wMiw venture of the I.H.S.A. One would think that they would take this into consideration, when ntftigning teams to play in regional tourneys. It would make more sense to have Grant, and another team in the area assigned to the local regional, rattier than Hononegah and Belvidere. Between these two schools they wouldbe lucky to bring one bus load of fans to McHenry. As the host school receives some of the receipts, it doesn't look as if the Warrior Athletic department is going to get rich this craning March. I guess the only advantage is having the home floor, and the great Warrior fans rooting tor you. Let's hope the Warriors take advantage of this in early March. , / Our good friend Gary Collins, former Warrior sophomore coach, has been named the bead basketball coach at the new Crystal Lake south high school South will be competing in the new Fax Valley Conference next season. In talking with the genial, popular coach, he is looking forward to competing against his old boos Ren Ludwig next season. The new school has an unusual nickname for this part of the country. The students selected the name of "Gators", along with the colors of Xxreen aiyijGold. f Gary, althotjgfemisting JohnSwetison at Crystal Lake i this season, hat already been fcaWPat work. He has a complete schedule for next season, and is looking for a holiday tournament to take his team during the Christmas » 1 As was said before we wish Gary the best of hick, except when competing against our Warriors. Don Bentz and George Mayer are twHng progress for the big night at West campOs on Jan. 21. That is the night that the McHenry high Booster dub will stage a basketball doubleheader for the purpose of raising funds for the Athletic department at McHenry high school. One game will have the Inter-Mural ehampa of the school play the faculty, and the feature attraction will have a group of alumni divided into the odd or even year they graduated (day the feature game. We are sending out a call for former cheerleaders to join in the fun. Please contact Don Bentz or myself if interested. We are in hopes of getting the "Old Warrior" Cliff Fulton to return that night, and take his seat on the bench, and to coach each team for a half. That in itself should be worth the price of admission. Only thing better would be to have Gib Kurtz of Woodstock on the other bench. Then we could forget about the game and watch these two put on a show. They did it for years competing against one another in the North Suburban. Final plans will be made on Jan. 5 at the American Legion. That is the Booster club's next meeting. Time is 7:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend this meeting. Going down memory lane, we hope that some of the names that appear in the box score are still in the area, and just might take part on the twenty-first The game was played way back in 1958 and the Warriors were on their way to their only North Suburban They enjoyed a 22 pt lead at halftime and coasted to an easy 83 to 54 win over the Blue Streaks from Wooditock. The first five for the Warriors all were in double Agues we could use some of that scoring today.
