Miller also explained the increase amounts to a 6.6 percent hike above benefit payments last fall. An unmarried veteran will receive $311 per month under the new increase as opposed to the $292 received in the past. The hike is retroactive to Oct. 1, 1977 for students who were enrolled in the fall semester. .Miller said. The inci^se ̂ means a married veteran will receive $370 per month; a veteran who is married with one child, $422 per month: and veterans with more than one child will receive an additional $26 per month for each child. While the new act has been criticized for not going far enough in increasing veterans benefits. Miller pointed out that Illinois veterans fare better than those who live in other states. Illinois residents can have all of their in-district tuition and most of their fees paid by the* state, in addition to their federal benefits, while in other states the veterans have to use the G.I bill to cover tuition as well as living expenses "With the increased payments, now is the time for veterans to take advantage of their G .I. bill benefits and enroll for the spring semester," Miller urged He said many veterans procrastinate too long and their benefits expire before they get around to attending college. Veterans have only ten years from their date of separation from a©tiyqg^t#y to use the federal" benefits. Miller said. Veterans who are interested in learning more about the G.I Bill benefits and the vocational and college transfer programs offered at MCC may telephone Miller (815) 455-3700, ext. 266 Spring semester courses at the college begin Jan 9 with registration resuming Jan. 3 through Jan 13.
