SUPPLEMENT TO THE McHENRY PLAINDEALER PAGE 21 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11,1977 Appliance economics According to the National Home Improvement Coun cil, homeowners about to in vest in appliances for their newly-remodeled kitchens are well-advised to consider investing in energy-saving models. For example, selecting a new refrigerator will most likely be a surprising experi- ence for the average homeowner. He'll find some amazing innovations, par ticularly power-saving fea tures and improved insula tion. One energy-saving model uses about a third less elec tricity than other models not equipped with its special thermostatically-controlled motor. While it is true that the amount of electricity consumed by the refrigerator each operating hour is a modest amount, it is also true that it is operated twenty- four hours around the clock, 365 days a year: Even though frost-free re frigerators do use more kilowatts of energy annually than non-frost-free models, they avoid the extra energy drain resulting from frost ac cumulation. Today's power-saving re frigerators also preserve food longer during power failures, which become alarmingly more common each year. Operating savings in the long run compensate for the higher initial purchase price. ! FACTS S > & FI6URES J iimt7nwn»t*ywoiM»U One third of all the energy used in the United States is used by industry. That's why many companies are doing all they can to become more energy efficient. CONSERVATION MEA SURES helped one company save enough oil to heat 127,000 homes. But indus try sayings don't mean that homeowners have any less to do in the fight against energy waste. A good example of a major conservation effort was the 1976 fuel saving at Continental Oil Company's refining, chemical, petroleum production, natural gas and gas products operations. They saved the equivalent of 2.7 million barrels of fuel oil- enough to supply a year's worth of heat to 127,000 homes. An impressive 17 percent of this energy conservation was accomplished through an effort homeowners can understand--better insulation, which cut the energy used in storage tanks and vessels. The saving equaled 460,000 barrels of oil--or enough to heat 21,000 homes for a year. spurgeon's 4400 W.
