Some folks were initially disappointed when their Christmas trees were not picked up on the first refuse „ after the holidays. This disappointment turned to joy when the trees were picked up last week on a pickup day which was not quite so cluttered with holiday boxes, trees, and extras. An impossible dream? Village problems will never seem insurmountable again; our village president attended a showing of "Man of La Mancha." Remember that the library is open every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 4 to 5 p.m. The librarian is there to serve you. Why riot drop in and have her help you find a book to curl up with on these cold evenings? The T.V. can satiate, irritate, and maybe educate but a good book can ameliorate, activate, and stimulate. TAX FACTS | Taxpayers can file accurate and complete tax returns by keeping good financial records throughout the year, Charles F. Miriani, IRS district director for northern Illinois, said. By keeping good financial records the taxpayer can not only substantiate expenses, income and itemized deduc tions listed on his or her tax return, but also be aware of certain deductions that might otherwise be overlooked. Though taxpayers are not required to keep any particular type of records, they must retain all receipts, cancelled checks, bills and other written documents to prove their ex penses. These records must be kept for at least three yearsftom the date that the return was due or filed, or two years ^om the date that the tax was paid, whichever occurs later. Some records should be kept even longer, Miriani advised. For example, property records should be retained as long as they are useful in determining the basis of the original or replacement property. And keeping copies of past tax returns can help the taxpayer prepare future returns. For additional information on recordkeeping, taxpayers can order the free IRS Publication 5 5 2 , " R e c o r d k e e p i n g Requirements and a Guide to Tax Publications." by sending in the order blank found in the tax package.
