/ PAC.F 18 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 25, H78 by stall psychologist from the Family Service and Mental Health Clinic of McHenry County (Editor's note:. This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental health center staff. This article is "Coping with Death-Anger in Mourning.") - A woman examining her reaction to the untimely death of her husband may feel, to her shame and disgust, that after the initial period of disbelief and grief she is left iwith a vague, but persistent feeling of anger towards the dead husband for leaving her with a financial burden and the responsibility of raising the children. A man feels resentful to an old and trusted friend who has died and left him friendless and with no one to turn to when he needs someone to talk to Of all the reactions to the death of someone who was loved, none is as puzzling or distressing as the very real anger that one sometimes feels when someone close dies. It is important first of all to be able to put a label on that feeling, to recognize it for what it is. Yes, it is anger, real and profound Next, \t is important to examine the feeling and determine wfiy it is present. To the survivor of the deceased, it seems almost as if the dead person had deserted the survivor purposefully. This is ultimately the source of the anger: You have dited and left me here while I still needed your companionship. I loved you and you left me. It is the extraordinary person who can look at this feeling and accept it without the concomitant guilt that is inherent in having a negative feeling about the dead, for there is an inviolable taboo in our society against feeling ill towards someone who has died. Worse, there is the feeling that somehow one is being less than faithful to the deceased by not feeling anything but grief and sorrow at the death of the loved person. ' * The feeling of anger, however, is an almost inevitable consequence of the passing away of a person whom we loved. Ironically, the more we have loved and depended on the person, the more angry we are apt to be at his passing away. This feeling, often felt but seldom expressed, may be a source of guilt to the survivor for a long time following the actual grieving process. The cathartic effect able to say directly and/With no guilt or shame, "sometimes I hate you for dying and leaving me here all alone without you to understand me," can be an invaluable aid in purging oneseit 01 grief and anger, rand getting on with the business of living. VFW Auxiliary Helps Cancer Aid Program The Ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars promote and support many programs each year. One that is supported by members of the Ladies auxiliary to VFW Post 4600 is the cancer aid and research program. The cancer chairman of the local auxiliary, Renee Jende, has successfully raised money in the past year which has made it possible for the auxiliary to donate at least $1.25 per member to the cancer aid and research program. This is a quota set by the Ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars on the state level. The cancer aid and research fund have made it possible for auxiliary members to receive financial aid in the form of a grant at a time when expenses are unbelievably high. In ad dition to the aid for auxiliary members, researchers are awarded grants to further research in the many areas of cancer. Last year $101,000 was awarded for cancer research, public education and fellowships. Many auxiliaries throughout the nation make it possible for their members to be enrolled in the cancer insurance program. The Ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 carries this program which provides financial aid to its members should they be stricken with cancer. This aid is over and above the grants from the national organization. Payment of over $14,000 was received by thirty-three auxiliary members in the state of Illinois in a three-month period. This is an increase of almost 50 percent over the same period last year. The donations made by auxiliary members will help make it possible for many to defeat cancer through research. | Political Comer Fund Raising For Democrats On Saturday McHenry county Democrats will hold a fund raising dinner Saturday, Jan. 28, at the American Legion hall, Ringwood road, Guest speaker will be Michael J.
