Thank you Bernie Klapperich Normally we would set this up separately, Bernie. But, since you requested putting it in this column, you got it this time. You might call it a grand opening-opening a letter from our high school basketball coach. Gordon Stringer, who now resides in Holiday, Florida. Modesty* forbids me from giving you the whole letter, but let's shoot the works with most of it. "I want to congratulate you for your very effective column "So I Hear". At my age it is very gratifying to learn that so many former students are living happy, successful lives." Coach Stringer thinks teachers should remember the real purpose of education is to train students to lead happy, successful lives. Coach says his latest fine letter was from Dick Stenger of California where many of his former students now live. It must gladden the heart of an 80 year (?) old man to have the respect and admiration of so many former pupils. Such a person knows the richness of life. Ded^Earl, Since as long as I can remember we had two bridges in McHenry, the Pearl Street bridge was called the "Old Bridge" and the bridge on Rt. 120 was called the "New Bridge". Because of this so called naming of our bridges and the construction of a newer bridge to replace the "Old Bridge", I am calling on you to set us straight to what we shall now call our bridges. Shall we call the "Old Bridge" the "New Old Bridge" and the "New Bridge" the "Old New Bridge" or the "Old Bridge" the "New Bridge" and the New Bridge" the "Old Bridge" or the Old Bridge" the "Newer Old Bridge" and the "New Bridge" the "Older New Bridge" or the "Old Bridge" the "Later New Bridge" and the "New Bridge" the "Early New Bridge". I guess we could call them by numbers but then we also have to think of business places that use the name of "Old Bridge". There it is in a nut shell, what do you think Earl? George Worts Dear George: What do I think? You have me so confused that I can't think. Those who opposed the new bridge would have a name for it, but one must be careful what goes in print. Since the county engineered the structure and put the most money in it, maybe some of those officials have a name in mind. Some call it the "Pearl Street Bridge." One fellow told of driving over "the hump." Wonder what the "Old Bridge Tavern" has in mind for a name? You put it in a nut shell, George, as only you could do. However, it seems like a hard nut to crack. Yours, S.I.H. Two people have said they picked Michigan in the Rose Bowl because I picked em in this column. Of course they lost their money. Don't ever bet on my picks After picking the Dallas Cowboys all the way, it might be a good time to quit and trust it all to "Jimmy The Greek." Cousin Irene's husband, Paul Rieger, is the only person I met this winter who didn't complain about the snow. As the white stuff came down one day last week, he thought it was nice to cover up the old, dirty slush. The basketball game bet ween' MCHS grads Saturday night turned into a race horse, running game that ended 73 to 70-. IVIcHenry won! Cliff Fulton was all smiles throughout the game No pressure in this one. Jerry Larkin, one of McHenry's top athletes in past years enjoyed the game, joined by Wally Smith, his son John, the McCrackens and Yours Truly in the balcony. Dick Rabbitt will have a full report. Being unable to use the many group pictures sent in, a decision was made to discon tinue all league groups except championship teams. Pictures takes by our staff photographers of athletes on the high school level will be selected as to their importan ce. Individual pictures of various sports will be appraised as to their newsworthy value and available space. It was a flood of group pic- tures last year that made this decision by the management necessary. By Dick Rabbitt Before a good crowd at West campus gym on Saturday night, the even year graduates, defeated the odd numbered basketball crew by a score of 73 to 70. It was a fun happy time, with both sides using their bench, and yet there was a bit of competition between the two groups. The evens, coached by Gib Kurtz, former coach at Woodstock, jumped out to an early lead, with Paul Morenz, Vern Peterson, and Gary Fairchild providing much of the spark in the early going. The Bentz brothers, tDon, Myron, and Mark countered, and kept the Evens from making a runaway of it in the first half. A foul called on the "Old Warrior" Cliff Fulton, led his opponent Gib Kurtz to the free throw line, and like a true performer, the Gibber sunk the two free throws, much to the delight of the crowd. With all twenty-nine players seeing action in the first half the Evens walked off at in termission leading 40 to 33. During the second half the Evens kept their lead in creasing it at one time to 13, but then with several minutes to play, the Odds began to catch up, and with 50 seconds remaining finally took the lead 67 to 66. This brought the crowd to life, and in the final seconds the Evens managed to hit a couple of clutch free throws to walk away the winner. It was indeed a grand night for all who attended. The Booster club did a nice job in staging the affair, and early reports took in over eight hundred dollars for the evening The players had a good time, the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, and the two honorary coaches put on a good show During one of the numerous timeouts, Don Bentz and Billy Oeffling, members of the 1959 championship team, presented to Coach Fulton a framed photo of that great team. Debbie Koczor and Wayne Dixon Jr., were winners of the game balls. Don Bentz led all scorers with 15 pts, and Jim Heard has 12. In the first game the In tramural All Stars defeated the faculty 59 to 50. Pat Wirtz led the scoring for the faculty with 21 pts, and Dave Kotiw led the All Stars with 16.
