Winless Wildcats Wreck Warriors With 57-50 Win Dismal Close To Home Dual Season For MCHS Wrestling Warriors PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 25, 1978 NORTH SUBURBAN BA8KETBALL By Dick Rabbitt The Libertyville Wildcats broke a fourteen game losing streak at the expense of the Mctfenry Warriors Friday night by defeating the Warriors 57 to 50. For the past several weeks teams have been afraid that the Wildcats would break loose and finally win one, and that they did on their home court before a good crowd. The Warriors were in trouble almost from the beginning as A1 Reinboldt picked up three fouls in the first two and one half minutes. However, Jeff Partenheimer and Scott Dixon managed to keep the Warriors going and they led at the end of the period 13 to 9. The Warriors maintained this slim margin * throughout the second period, until the last two minutes, when they hit a dry spell, and the Cats took advantage and grabbed three baskets to lead at the intermission 25 to 24. In the third period the lead exchanged hands four times, and with 50 seconds remaining Reinboldt's free throw tied it at 38, but Romeo countered for the Cats with just seconds remaining and the Cats led 40 to 38. Midway in the final period the "Cats" took a five point lead, and the Warriors saw their hope for a victory dwindle away. The "Cats" forced the Warriors to come out, and fouling resulted, and the Libertyville players walked off with their first win of the season. Both teams made numerous mistakes, but the Warriors couldn't take advantage of the Libertyville miscues. They were outrebounded by the smaller Libertyville five, and once the Cat's smelled victory, they were hard to beat. I think the Warriors will have to regroup this week, and make up their minds to play the type of ball they are capable of playing. They are surely a better ball club than the one I saw last Friday night. So come on Warriors, let's bear down, the second half of the season is on us. Make up your minds that you are going all out. You can do it, and we are all behind you. A good time to start is Friday night when the Tigers come to town. Montini posted victories over Hebron, J&ig Hollow and Richmond. In Game No. 1 Montini coasted past Hebron with a 59- 23 victory The scoring leaders were Bill Hermann (13 pts.), Dan Long (8 pts.), Curt Reh- berg (5 pts.) and Ben Schweder (4 pts.). Fine performances were turned in by Steve Schierra, Tom McMahon, Mike Leon and Charlie Wegener. Game No. 2 was a hard fought victory over Big Hollow (42-36). Mike Sabatka (21 pts.) and Jerry Balchunas (12 pts.) were offensive weapons for MontieL The defense was anchored by the ball-hawking of John HuffaKen Pocsiak and Jim McDonough. The championship game was won by Montini over Richmond by a score of 45-40. In two previous meetings these two conference powerhouses had split. Montini used a tenacious man-to-man defense to over come the Richmond size and strength. Mike Sabatka again led the Mustangs with 19 points. Scott Larsen (8 pts.) and Bill Hermann (6 pts.) dominated the backboards. Scott Truckenbrod clinched the victory for Montini wit{i 4 clutch free throws in the final minutes. Montini played ex cellent throughout the tour nament. Outstanding in dividual performances were turned in by Sabatka, Huff, Larsen and Truckenbrod. The Mustangs are looking forward to their trip to Peoria, 111., on Feb. 11. Montini will battle the champs of Peoria in a preliminary game at Bradley university. Bradley will host New Mexico State in a Missouri Valley Conference game after the preliminary. Gals Defeat Crown Basketballers, 55-34 Coach Pam Schafer's McHenry high girls basketball team won their first game of the season by defeating Crown 55 to 34. After losing four non conference games, Coach Schafer was glad to win their first conference game of the season. The local gals jumped off to an early lead, and were never in serious trouble. An nette Dercole paced the attack with 13 pts. / Scoring: Dercole 13; Jacobs 11; Hutchinson 9; Jackson 8; Switzer 4; Smith 4; Freeland 2; Wilson 2; Toole 2. LAMCOG Due to lack of a quorum, the LAMCOG meeting of Jan. 16, 1978 has been rescheduled for Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at the Island Lake village nail, Route 176. The organization serves the governments of Lake and McHenry counties. The Wrestling Warriors home dual jseapon came to a dismal close Friday night as Libertyville wiped up the mats with the wounded Warriors. Injuries, illnesses, forfeits and much half-hearted wrestling continue to plague the McHenry team and Friday night was no exception. Libertyville beat the varsity Warriors 54 to 4. McHenry's sole 4 points came as a result of Tom Hughes' 15-7 major decision over Ed Bauer in the 138 lb. match. This win brought Hughes' varsity record up to 3 and 2 and his overall season record to 11-2-0. Jr. Rivera had been wrestling a fine match, out-scoring his opponent 11 to 4 until the final seven seconds wehn he moved in the wrong direction, ending up on his own shoulders for a Wildcat pin. The Warrior junior varsity could make no dent in the Libertyville line-up, losing by a complete "54-0 score. Five McHenry forfeits and two Wildcat pins pushed the score well beyond Warrior reach. The WatYior freshmen had the best showing of the evening, losing 18-48. Eighteen of those points were, given to the Wildcats through three McHenry forfeits. Vic Betencourt, a freshman at 112 pounds, had the only Warrior pin of the evening, downing his opponent in 41 seconds. Saturday's wrestling mat ches looked little better as the team continued its downhill slide. Traveling to Palatine to wrestle Fremd, the varsity Warriors lost a non-conference match 54 to 4. Jeff Hurches and Marty Nuss tied their matches for the only varsity points. The Junior Varsity forfeited and lost their way to a 0-65 score. Again the freshmen wrestlers , were the Warrior stars for the day. Although they officially lost as a team 30-47, if the three McHenry forfeits and the two double forfeits are ignored, the McHenry wrestlers won the matches actually wrestled 18 to 11. Just seven boys make up the freshmen squad this year, but their progress has been good and their futures appear bright in this sport. Tony Parisi claimed the only Warrior pin against the Vikings in 5:16, bringing his season record up to 7 wins and 6 losses. Justen had two great games... 193 and 190 while J. Lescher (188) and L. Johnson (187) did well for men's high game. R. Justen (569), A. Boeldt (508), and L. Johnson (507) took high series. B. Miller bested the men with a beautiful 200 and L. Estis came close with a 184. By a slim one pin, E. Rogers (487) and L. Estis (486) battled for high series. L. Estis was really on her game and picked off the 5-7, while M. Hauge got the 5-8-10 and M. Kangas did it to the 4-7-10. Wine winners were: M. Kangas B. Novak, M. Holm, B. Street, and L. Estis.
