These included interviews with school board members, ad ministrators, instructors, guidance counselors, the vocational Advisory council members, and students in the vocational program. The team analyzed the quality of each occupational program through these interviews and reviewed the availability of programs to all students. In addition, the team looked at the way oc cupational programs are managed This includes both the administrative structure as well as the operational ef fectiveness of the structure. Community involvement in the Vocational program was also investigated. The team focus for this component was directed at involvement of community representatives, and hqw the community resources in the operation and evaluation of occupational programs have been utilized. The use of advisory com mittees, cooperation with other education and service agencies and the use of community work stations for cooperative education pursuits aret examples of areas reviewed. Prior to leaving McHenry, the state team prepared a report of its findings with suggestions for improvement. The report was presented orally during a summary conference at the end of the on- site visit. The report becomes a vehicle for future planning and im provement. Dale Halgren, director of Vocational Education at McHenry high school, stated "the evaluation team appears to have developed a very good feel for the district in a relatively short period of time. The oral report delivered few surprises. Points of strength include a fine vocational stcff, advisory council, and a community rich in resources. The current 2-2 year building structure was pointed out to be a major ob stacle to effective coordination and improvement of vocational programs. We now have a lot of recommendations and goals to work toward." This evaluation is financed by the state. A similar evaluation by a private counsulting firm would have been at considerable cost. YOUTH ON THE MOVE •1 I I J Cavies Make (iood I'rban Animal l-ll Projects Cavies or guinea pigs are one of a host of small animals ur ban youth can raise in 4-H. says Kathi Heberer, McHenry County Extension adviser Being small, inexpensive, relatively harmless and nearly odor-free, cavies can help urban youth learn many biological and scientific processes. A first year member in the guinea pig project learns about daily care, feeding and management of animals. In addition, the member learns about the history of cavies and how they got their name. Native to South America, these rodents were first taken to Europe about 1580 by the Dutch who found them in Dutch (iuiana They were first termed guiana pigs but later became DOES YOUR HONE QUALIFY? The 4-H member learns the different breeds of cavies. how they reproduce and how to keep them healthy Although the project is designed to teach young people about animal life, many members find it profitable to grow cavies for laboratory research purposes Youth in terested in raising cavies for research must, however, obtain a license and abide by provisions of the Laboratorv Animal Welfare Act, warns Kathi Heberer Contact Kathi Heberer or Dave Plocher at the McHenry County Cooperative Extension Office or call 815-338-3737 or 338- 4747 to learn more about joining 4-H and enrolling in the cavies project Sheep Shearing Schools University of Illinois Sheep Specialist Gary Ricketts has announced the following 1978 Sheep Shearing school schedule: March 28-29 - University of Illinois Sheep barn.
