SAFETY CRUSADER After his wife and daughters died in a fire in January, 1975, New York real estate developer Charles Evans sent smoke detectors to 4,000 people. "I spent three months trying to think of a memorial and then this idea came to me," says Mr Evans. I hired an electrical engineer to find the best possible battery-powered alarm." Then he designed a gift package and mailed the alarms to a list including relatives, business and social acquain tances, parents of children at his daughers' school and the one his 13-year-old son attends. A note read: "This gift is of fered to you on one serious condition - you must install it immediately. It could save a life." He asked recipients to send one, which he'll sell at cost, to someone they loved. "I felt that trying to prevent tragedies similar to mine," says Mr. Evans, "would be a better memorial than endowing something like a library." A staff of two, now per- manenlty employed by his Crusade for Fire Detection, handled the mailbags of letters that poured in. One person sent a check for $500, with a request to send alarms to some in stitutions that couldn't afford them. Such checks are used to send alarms to unprotected homes for children and a variety of institutions, half-way houses and foster homes. Charles Evans' major aim is "to have a smoke detector every place where people sleep " Some states and cities now require that all new structures have them He is trying to get such legislation passed in New York and New Jersey. The Crusade for Fire Detection at 745 Fifth avenue. New York, N Y 10022, has sold 100.000 smoke detectors at cost One man who cares started a chain-reaction that will save lives Hamburg.
