PAGE 6 PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 22, 1978 Warriors Defeat Main North 61-52 Mayer Knox Byers Deemer Totals By Dick Rabbitt Getting out of North Suburgan league play for a change was a tonic to the Warriors on Saturday night as they defeated Maine North by the score of 61 to 52. - The Warriors kept their turnovers down to a season low of eleyen, and that made a big difference in the outcome Barry "Bear" Paulsen got the Warriors on the track with two quick baskets in the opening minutes, and with Scott Dixon's three baskets along with Don Bentz, who started in place of the flu ridden A1 Reinboldt, the Warriors had a 12 to 6 lead, only to see it dwindle to 12 all at the buzzer. ' The teams exchanged baskets in the early going of the second period, until Don Bentz's turn around jumper put the Warriors ahead 18 to 16. Marty Deener canned a 10 footer and Doug Oeffling followed suit and the Warriors were on top by 6. They con tinued to hold this margin until Partenheimer's basket near the close of the period gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the night at the intermission 28 to 21. In the third period the Warriors jumped out to a 13 pt. bulge at the 5:00 mark on Dixon's layup and at the 3:00 mark Bentz's two free throws kept the Warrior margin at thirteen 38 to 25, but then the locals hit a drv spell and didn't score the remainder of the period, while the Norsemen picked up six to trail 38 to 31. The Norsemen put on a rally early in the final period creeping to within one 43 to 42 when Mark Mayer came out of the pile to tip one in for the Warriors to get them back on track. The remainder of the game saw Paulsen and Par- tenheimer take control for the Warriors, and Scott Dixon's two free throws with a second remaining sealed the win for the Warriors. Although the game was a slow, listless affair, the Warriors looked a lot better than they did Friday night against the ZeeBees. As said before their turnovers were a seasons 'iun, c...u outrebounded the visitors. They had balanced scoring as four Warriors were in double figures led by Paulsen with 14. Par- tenheimer picked up 12 and Bentz and Dixon each had 10. Although the Antioch game was close, the girls played one of their better games of the season. They worked as a team, kept their cool, and kept down the turnovers. The gals moved the ball well, and all but four of their baskets were made from the inside, because of the spread out of fense that pulled the defense out of their zone. (which included McHenry), nine will continue on to the state tournament. Dave Mohapp of Woodstock placed second in the 185 pound class, losing a 5-4 overtime cham pionship match. Also going to the state match will be Crystal Lake's 145 pound wrestler, Steve Ratcliffe, who won his championship match with a 37 second fall. Ratcliffe and Zimmerman tied for the quickest pin of this tourney. Seven of the eight North Suburban conference schools were represented in this sec tional, sending in 18 wrestlers and emerging with six state qualifiers. Crown district wrestlers were involved in the Northlake West Leyden sec tional along with wrestlers from the Maine West, East Leyden and Niles East districts. Coach Marty Sobczak will be accompanying Zimmerman on his trip to the University of Illinois Assembly Hall this weekend as well as a number of other McHenry wrestling fans. Mike is paired with the second place winner from the Chicago sectional, Tony Banks of Chicago Schurz, for the first round. It has been three years since our last Warrior wrestler, Ken Scanlin, wrestled and placed eighth in the state tournament and Warrior supporters are delighted to once again be represented in the Class AA State Wrestling tournament. Mike Zimmerman Qualifies For State Wrestling Meet At Champaign This Weekend At the sectional wrestling tournament at Barrington high school last Friday and S a t u r d a y . M c H e n r y ' s aggressive 167 pound wrestler, Mike Zimmerman, captured third place in his weight class and qualified for the state wrestling tournament in Champaign this Friday and Saturday. A new ruling this year allows the top three wrestlers in each of the twelve weight classes to advance out of the sectionals to the state toruney instead of the top two as in past years. To win his third place medal last weekend, Zimmerman decisioned his Rockford Jef ferson opponent 7-4, lost a close, hard fought semi-final match to his Buffalo Grove opponent 13-12, pinned Bob Wakid of Mundelein in 37 seconds of the first period and then went on to win the con solation match 8-2 over Bob Derango of Rockford Boylan. Derango had beaten Zim merman twice previously in two other tourneys during the season. The first place 167 wrestler, Dale Walters of Wheeling boasts an unbeaten season record of 30-0. Zimmerman has compiled an impressive season record of 24- 6-1 now. The senior also chalked up his 100th career win during the tournament and has a high school wrestling career record of 101 wins and 24 losses. After remarks in this column about the Cubs not getting out a schedule, Eddie Bimbo presented us with one. Yep. It's for '78. Jo Rizzo presented us with a loaf of her famous pizza bread. Who says an Irishman doesn't like Italian food -- We tried it and like it. With some sports fans, Ali was popular in defeat. Others wanted to see him get his head knocked off. One observer noted that the ones who wanted to see the great one on his back listening to the birdies sing were the ones who put their money on him. Leon Spinks may not be the greatest, but he is one tough cookie. He was the aggressor all the way and had more points on our card than the expert judges gave him. SPORTS EDITOR _J a higher percentage of shots swish through than they have all season if their record tells us anything. We saw the old Hebron Green Giants' style of play late in the game as Coach Phil Judson (one of the Giants) ordered a control game. The Zee-Bees couldn't do it the way the Green Giants did, but the idea was there. There were reasons why the Warriors lost, not the least of which was poor passing. No way we could fault the way our boys battled to win. As we watched proceedings in Judge Cooney's probate court last week, we saw three lady attorneys and a lady bailiff. Things are changing, men.
