Doug Oeffling's free throw with nine seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime. Playing without the services of Jeff Partenheimer, their leading scorer, the Warriors grabbed an early lead and were ahead at the end of the initial period 12 to 6. Both teams missed numerous shots during the opening period of play. The tempo picked up in the second period, and during this period many will think that fate played a hand in the Warrior loss. Early in the period, Doug Oeffling hit a fifteen footer, but it was nullified by a foul, on the part of another Warrior. Anyway both teams con­ tinued their assault on the basket, with a little more success, but the Warriors managed to hang on to a 29-25 halftime lead. Jerry Howell, Viking leading scorer with the help of foul trouble was held to a mere four points the first half. However, once the second half began the young lad proved to the small crowd, why he is one of the leading scorers in the North Suburban. He scored 13 pts during the period, but with Oeffling, Mayer, Bentz, Dixon, hitting the net, the Warriors still managed to hold on to a slim 51 to 50 lead going into the final period. Midway in the final stanza the Vikes took their biggest lead of the night 58 to 55, but Reinboldt, Bentz and Knox all hit to put the Warriors up by three 61 to 58. A three second violation nullified another Warrior basket, and the Vikes came roaring back only to see Oef­ fling's free throw knot it up with nine seconds left in the game. In the overtime A1 Reinboldt got the Warriors ahead, and after Howell tied it up, Don Bentz connected with a 10 footer to again put the Warriors in the lead. Howell's three free throws gave the Vikings a 69 to 68 lead, then with nine seconds, Mark Mayer came out of a scramble and put the ball in the hoop to give the Warriors the lead 70 to 69. With four seconds left, Howell was fouled, and made both to seal the Warriors doom. A lot of credit is due the Warriors for their fine effort. The favorite Vikings, with & big height advantage were hard put to put the Warriors away in the game. The Warriors had five boys in double figures. Doug Oeffling had 17 points to lead the Warriors. Big Mark Mayer came off the bench to play his greatest game as a Warrior. The big guy had 12 points and came down with some key rebounds. A1 Reinboldt picked up 10 pts, as did Scott Dixon and Don Bentz. With Libertyville here tonight for Parents' Night, look for the Warriors to close out the regular season on a winning note. If they can play like they did the second half tonight, they will chalk up another win.
