SUPPLEMENT TO McHENRY PLAINDEALER - PAGE 27 - FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 1»78 Fastest home improvement of all . . . Give bathroom new drama with easy-to-install carpet Carpet in a room can im prove its appearance more quickly and dramatically than almost any other home improvement. The cost of installation, however, is a consideration for most people. There is an alternative to paying for pro fessional help--do it your self. Now, in the easiest form ever available, carpet squares make installation of wall-to-wall carpet simple and enjoyable. A bathroom is an ideal place for this rejuvenating cosmetic. The area is small and the few hours and dollars involved create a simple and economical transformation. It's such light work that a homemaker can handle the project herself. New look Carpet makes an older bathroom appear new again without major structural changes. It hides neglected or worn-out floors that can't be repaired. Moreover, it is soft and comfortable with built-in safety features; slip ping and foot-chilling are all but eliminated. When you use carpet squares, there's no need to buy additional padding since cushioning is already built in. A new roof gives home 'curb appeal' E v e r t h i n k a b o u t w h a t p e o p l e n o t i c e w h e n a p proaching or driving past your house? Look around the n e x t t i m e y o u ' r e d r i v i n g through a neighborhood and you'll spot it immediately. It's the roof. Despite the fact that the roof plays a major role in the entire appearance of a home, many people all but ignore the decorative effect a roof can play in giving a house "curb appeal." Yet when the time comes f o r r e p l a c e m e n t , m a n y homeowners ignore the aes thetic aspects of rerooflng. The Asphalt Roofing Man u f a c t u r e r s A s s o c i a t i o n points out that the color is important. A white or light- colored roof, for instance, adds height and dimension to a small, low house. A sloped dark roof, on the other hand, diminishes the size of a large, steeply sloped roof. Increasingly popular are asphalt shingles in earthtone shades of greens and browns, that can be used to blend the overall color scheme of a home with the siding colors. The variety of earthtone shades in asphalt shingles helps to avoid a roof that looks like all the others in the neighborhood. Three-dimensional asphalt shingles in a handsome earth- tone shade produce a roof w i t h d e e p , a t t r a c t i v e shadowlines that create an image of depth and rugged- ness. Easy installation Here's how easy it is to in stall carpet squares: 1. Measure the room to find its center point. Use a T-square to make sure you have a right angle. 2. Starting in the middle of the room, peel back the pro tective paper from each square, and lay squares along the chalk lines in one quarter of the room in the shape of a large "L." 3. Fitting along the room perimeter is easy when you follow instructions found in e a c h 1 0 - p a c k o f c a r p e t squares. In or around an irregular area like the toilet bowl, sim ply make a paper pattern of the space you must fill or allow for; trace the pattern on the square? and shape it with a scissors or knife. While not absolutely nec essary, metal door trim or re ducer strips, available at dealer or hardware stores, can be used for exposed edges in doorways. When carpet squares were first introduced a few years ago, they came in only a few styles; now there are Saxony plushes and sculptured shags as well as durable level-loop textures. With pressure- sensitive adhesive on the back, there is no mess, and little preparation of the floor is necessary other than mak ing certain the surface is clean and dry. Seams are scarcely noticeable when all squares are down. Economical elegance What an easy way to give coziness and elegance to a bath without opening the "tap" on the budget! A job well done in this room can serve as an inspiration for larger rooms of the home.
