Any Electrical Problem Can Be Shocking According to the National Fire Protection association, the most frequent cause of building fires in the United States during the years of 1970 and 1974 was electricity. Overloaded electric circuits are the chief contributors to electric fires. Having too many plugs in one outlet will overload a circuit and can cause overheating which may lead to a fire. Having several electric appliances such as toasters, irons and electric heaters on one circuit or using fuses larger than recommended can also cause overloads. Frayed or damaged electric cords and plugs should be replaced immediately as they can produce the sparks which can result in fires. The practice of running electric cords under rugs or carpets should be discontinued before foot traffic can damage the insulation thus creating another fire hazard. Twisting electric cords around metal hooks or holders is another common practice which must be discontinued if a home is to be fire safe. The following is a list of eight questions which the Com-, monwealth Edison company recommends you ask yourself to determine if your electric wiring may be inadequate: 1-Do lights dim when an electric appliance goes on? 2-Do motors slow down? 3-Do fuses blow frequently? 4-Do toasters or irons fail to heat properly? 5-Does your TV picture shrink? 6-Are you short of outlets? 7-Do you need more circuits? 8 Are switches and outlets properly insulated? Finally, it is important that electric wiring be installed and checked by a qualified elec trician. Remember, you can prevent fires with proper wiring. Cleaning Your Range Don't allow a dirty glass oven door to detract from the ap pearance of your kitchen range. Clean the glass doors by first moistening a cloth in hot water Dip the cloth in baking soda and rub the glass gently. Avoid using steel wool or abrasive scouring powders Jbhn Chapman's new heating system pulls energy out of thin air. John Chapman ol Woodridge is one ol the homeowners in northern Illi nois who recently installed a heat pump How"d he like it? "It's just been great-one unit that both heats and cools It really does the job." says John. How the heat pump works. Most heating systems heat by burning lossil fuels, like natural gas or oil. The heat pump is different It doesn't burn anything. It uses electricity to move heat from one place to the other-heat that already exists. Where? In the air around us. Even on cold, cloudy days, there's an abundance ol heat in the air-solar heat energy that the heat pump cap tures and moves indoors In warm weather, the process auto matically reverses lor cooling. The heat pump captures excess indoor heat and humidity and removes them to the outside. V9.:i f--*- r~ ? *: "?•</ The Remarkable Electric Heat Pump. Better efficiency. Today the heat pump is the best al ternative to heating systems which consume scarce lossil fuels. It taps an energy supply .'hat's virtually limit less-heat energy from the sun con tained in the air around us. And it is the most practical system to capture solar energy efficiently. In northern Illinois the heat pump, based on average performance lor a heating season, can deliver more than 1-1/2 units of heat energy lor every unit it consumes This means the heat pump not only saves energy, it can also gen erate long-term operating cost savings If you want additional heat pump inlormation. call your local Commonwealth Edison office and talk to one of our marketing engineers To get the full advantages of the heat pump, it's important to get a quality product, properly installed and ser viced For the name of qualified installers in your area, call G W Berkheimer Co.
