Tickets will also be available at the door. Help will be needed in setting up, serving, etc., also donations of bakery goods for dessert and bake sale is being aksed for from the members. The dinner will be served and available from noon to 4 p.m. Refreshment chairman was Tina Boeker with her committee of Vera Hensley, Marion Alford, Harriet Larsen, Lyda Radisch, Catherine Edstrom, Christine O'Dell, Dawn La Buy, Anna Cuda, Noelle Reid, Elaine Praage, Bonnie Amore, Alyce Brda, Dolores Steiner, Rosalyn Volpendesta and Carol Congdon. The next meeting of the McHenry unit will be April 17 with Cheryl Mowrer and Cathy Fenner as co-refreshment chairmen. Our annual initiation ceremonies will be held at this meeting and all new members are asked to please attend. SERVICE NEWS American Legion Auxiliary News on | McHenry Unit 491 By Pearl Cooper The March meeting of the McHenry American Legion auxiliary Unit No. 491, was called to order by Vice- President Grace Latimer in the absence of President Lydia Fenner. Ceil Violett, in the absence of Chaplain Eleanore Reid, led the group in the 'Prayer For Peace'. The flags were posted by Sergeant-at- Arms, Marge Datz and Midge Scharf. The pledge of allegiance was recited and the group sang the "Star Spangled Banner". Christer Niklasson of Sweden, this year's McHenry's A.F.S. student gave a very interesting talk, telling the members about his country of Sweden and also showed slides. The unit gave Christer a donation for the local A.F.S. chapter. The committee chairmen then gave their reports: Communications Chairman Pearl Cooper announced that she was once more compiling a publicity book for competition and asked the members to save articles from the newspapers for her. Danita Chester, coupon chairman, read an a c k n o w l e d g m e n t f r o m Harrison school for the 600 soup labels and asked the unit to continue saving the labels for playground equipment. She also announced that she had sent 2500 dog coupons to the Pilot Dog foundation. Illinois Girls' State chairman Marge Datz announced that Judy Vyduna has been selected to represent the unit in June at M a c M u r r a y c o l l e g e , Jacksonville, at Illini Girls' State, with Richelle Allen as alternate. Kathy Covalt announced that eleven Juniors had attended the roller skating party and she also announced that the Junior Father- Daughter banquet will be held June 4, 2 to 5. Pat President's Parley chairman Marge Datz announced that the spring county Past President's dinner will be held Thursday, April 20, and that she will be calling all past presidents for their reservations.The dinner will be hosted by the Marengo unit. She also read an acknowledgement from the Veteran's Craft exchange for the women patients. Midge Scharf announced that Poppy day this year will be held Saturday, May 13, and that workers are needed. The Veteran's Craft Exchange chairman announced that over $1,200 had been bought from the exchange so far this year. Veteran's Craft Exchange chairman is Betty Lou Smith. Birthday greetings were extended to Dottie Messer, Pearl Cooper, Lois Crouch and Tina Boeker. Ceil Violett and Betty Lingenfelter were winners of prizes and Pearl Cooper was present to receive the attendance award. WHAT S NEW Ensign Seaton Assault Ship Crewm amber Navy E nsign John M. Seaton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald E. Seaton o.« 3804 W. Grove avenue, McHenry, recently returned from an extended deployment in the Mediterranean sea. He Is serving as legal officer aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Guadalcanal, homeported in Norfolk, Va. While deployed, his ship operated as an unit of the U.S. Sixth Fleet. During the six-month cruise, Guadalcanal participated in various training exercises, including the major NATO exercises "Display Deter­ mination" in Europe and the combined naval exercises "National Week XXIV" and Sardinia *78" in the Mediterranean. Shipmates visited Italy, Spain and France. D u r i n g d e p l o y m e n t , Guadalcanal also participated in a search and rescue of five sailors stranded off the coast of Italy. Guadalcanal is 592 feet long, displaces 18,300 tons and carries a crew of 528 officers and enlisted men. She is designed to transport assault forces for . amphibious operations. She normally embarks a Marine battalion landing team and Marine helicopter squadron during a deployment. A 1972 graduate of McHenry Community high school, and a 1976 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, Ensign Seaton joined the Navy in December of 1976. Green Machine Training For Local Recruit PVT. RICHARD NELSON Pvt. Richard A. Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jenkins of 5107 Patton drive, Wonder Lake, has completed Army basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. He is a member of Company A, 18th Battalion, 4th Brigade, First Platoon, and an extended training period is preparing the recruit for membership in the elite "Green Machine" division of the Army. After a brief visit with his parents, he leaves for Camp Bucker of Alabama-AIT, where he will participate in 12 weeks of advance infantry training. Future duty training sessions will take Pvt. Nelson to the Aleutian Islands, Alaska, where a Ranger course will require 9 months of in­ structions, and then assign­ ment to Jump school. Pvt. Nelson is a Jan. 12,1978, graduate of McHenry Com­ munity high school. He has a brother, Jeff, at home, and his grandmother, Mrs. Edmund (Irene) Solinski, also makes her home with the family. RANK PROMOTION Marine Private First Class Thomas R» Michelsen, Jr., son of Thomas R. Michelsen, Sr., of 817 Center street, and Lillian E. Baumbeck of 2918 Parkside avenue, both of McHenry, has been promoted to his present rank while serving at the El Toro Marine Corps air station, Santa Ana, Calif. Pfc.
