PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. APRIL 7, 1978 r EARL WALSH So I Hear SPORTS EDITOR » Listening to weathermen tell about cold fronts warm fronts and 70 degree weather is fascinating But. some days it seems like the Old Farmers' Almanac might be better Everybody tells how "sick" they are of the winter Of course, spring is here, but the memory lingers on Think it was Will Rogers who said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it " Play ball! Come Friday and our TV will be tuned in for the opening of the baseball season Experts in Las Vegas have set the odds for the Sox at 60 to 1. Oh me! Just look at what they are doing to the Cubs, 100 to 1. We don't want to believe either of those odds Those *;oddsmakers are a bunch of spoil sports \ Call it loyalty or dummy pickin'. David Condon, the inimitable columnist, picks both Chicago teams for first , fj place No harm in aiming high The way the White Sox pit ching staff shapes up. it wouldn't be surprising to see Wilbur Wood and his flutterball on the mound for the opener. Saw the Oscar program Part of it. It was a drag. Seems like the winners thank everybody from their kin dergarten teachers to everybody but God. One big star forgot to button her dress. Her performance was a bust. Wonder if that Korean money that was brought to this country to influence our lawmakers was part of U.S. foreign aid funds? Mrs Olson still hasn't changed her brand of coffee. ATHLETES AWAY is one of our pet projects on the sports page. Smaller colleges send in news of our boys and girls who are in their athletic program. Larger schools aren't so apt to send the news. We like to keep track of our young people after graduation from high school Don't be afraid to brag a little if your son or daughter is in some sports program after their high school career. Send us the news We won't useyourv name as the one furnishing the material Let's make ATHLETES AWAY bigger and better. Many of us are interested in the young people of our community. Dear S.I H : Because of the icy condition of the roads. Sub, plus I was driving a light weight car, I slid into the ditch 100 ft. from Bull Valley Rd I couldn't get traction to pull out because of the steep incline, when a young man in a large cowboy hat and heavy jacket came walking down the middle of the road, to help me. He got me out and only told me his name was Herb. I wish to express my ap preciation to him again thru your column and let everyone know there are still great' people around. "God bless you, Herb." Barbara K. Hoeh It isn't often we let a thank you note slip into this column or any news item, but your note hits me as one that should be read. I know a Herb, but he doesn't wear a large cowboy hat. He wears a dinky cap with a big "C" on the front. Yes, Barbara. There are many fine people in this world. Too often we hear about the other kind.
