GREEN ST., 0FC. 8 MCHENRY- 344-1019 Grandma Scz • • • -Mi Havin' served th' public in many capacities in me lifetime, this ol' lady is appalled at th' attitude o' those employed in th' same services in this age. Seems that th' standards f'r ordinary politeness to those whose patronage pays th' wages o' th' clerks, telephone cperators, and employees o'those who serve communities need a bit o' revision. ' Some o' these folk seem t' feel that they may vent their moods on those who depend on 'em for help, related t' th' job they're a bein' paid f'r. One thing comin't' me attention is th' lack o' respect 'n tolerance f'r very old people. Now, this granny finds most folk t' be extremely obligin' an' respectful so I'm not a talkin' f'r meself. Once in a while an occasional instance occurs but th' thing I'm a gittin' at is when very old people, or folks who're incapacitated 're treated like they aren't entitled t' a little politeness, tolerance an' patience, when they solicit aid from those who git paid f'r it. Reflectin' about all this, me mind comes up wi' th' thought that it all begins at an early age in th' home among family members. Younguns.wi' havin' been taught consideration f'r others, incorporate this characteristic as they grow up. A most apparent indication of neglect on th' part o' parents in teachin' th' young how t' contribute t' a good relation ship wi' others, is th' condition o' our social structure these days. In days gone by, older folk were treated wi' regard. In most families, th' elders lived wi' family, learnin' t' enjoy 'em,an' reapin' a harvest o' knowledge about things from th' wisdom acquired through their many years. Some people seem t' f'rget that they'll be findin' 'emselves in that bracket which 'ppears t' bore 'em in their youthful ignorance. If they don't want t' receive th' same treatment they hand out now, me thinks they better try t' develop a better attitude afore it's too late. In me own youth, an' up to a few years back, employers set up rules f'r dealin' wi' th' public. No matter what th' problem, politeness, an' courtesy was th' "name o'-th' game," in business. It's a good policy fr all. Disrespect in th' home most usually is displayed in public. Parents can shape future societies wi' an' early start, right at home. Grandma Radtke Church Women United At this year's May Fellowship day service, beginning at noon May 5 at the First Congregational church, 461 Pierson, Crystal Lake, Church Women United will celebrate the fact that this is a visible and ecumenical com munity which involves itself in volunteer service. A panel with representatives from Meals-On-Wheels (Lillian Bolger); the Medical Van (Mary Brannock); Clothing Closet (Bertha Tammaues); Community Upholding Persons (Corine Gow); Parental Stress and Head Start programs (Linda Market); "Crises Beds" (a representative from Family Service and Mental Health clinic) will help us focus on some of the needs of the community and how they can make use of volunteers. Everyone is asked to bring a small salad and a sack lunch for children using the nursery. All are welcome to join Church Women United as members look back with satisfaction on a long history of volunteer service and explore the possibilities of serving the present needs within the various communities, as they celebrate together, "Promises to Keep".
