» IM.AINDEALER - WEDNESDAY. MAY 3.1978 MORAL EQUIVALENT IU HON \!.|» IfK. \N When he first brought it up on Inauguration day. 1977. President .Jimmy Carter said ' . 'our commitment to human rights is absolute " He should have added "absolutely selective " Today, in fa£t, i t adds up to the moral equivalent of imperialism Showing a dazzling ignorance of diplomacy and international polit ics. Carter and the ideologues who run his human rights office continue to try to force their views on allies who don't conform to the American Civil Liberties Union's view of things, while routinely ignoring communist totalitarian states. Make no mistake. In the \Vh#e House, "human rights" has almost nothing to do with the right to earn a living how and where one chooses; the right to live where one chooses; the right to keep the fruit of one's labor; and the right to be free from the random attacks of terrorists. To the Carterites these are frills. To them, the right to hold political rallies is infinitely more important and they see all jailed suspected terrorists in friendly countries \ The McHenry Plaindealer Established 1875 3812 West Elm Str**t Phon* 385-0170 McH»nry, Illinois 60050 e Published Every Wednesday t Friday at McHenry, Illinois Second Class Postage Paid at McHenry, Illinois By McHENRVPUBLISHINC COMPANY Subscribers or* r*qiws«*d to provide Immsdlsts node* of chang* of address to The McHenry Plaindealer M12 W Elm S».. While the First Amendment-type rights with which they are obsessed are important, these are secondary to a great many of the world's people who are still working on the other four rights. Laughing Slock How is the moral equivalent of imperialism faring? If the recent Carter trip to South America and Africa is an example, we may yet end up the laughing stock of the Western world. In Brazil (where the foreign minister told a television in terviewer that Carter had in vited himself), the president lectured his hosts on the evils of buying nuclear power plants from West Germany and about human rights. Then he proceeded to meet with op position politicians in a highly publicized get-together. That this latter move was considered "interference" in the Affairs of the country by Brazilian of ficials is not surprising. Even though Brazilians are vocal in their criticism of one another, they don't like to hear it coming from outsiders. (Who does?) The net result of all the presidential piety in Brazail; zero. Relations with Brasilia remain just barely in the temperate zone and the Brazilians have no intention of cancelling their nuclear con tract with the Germans. Looking on, the Argentinians (who at first felt slighted that they weren't included in the Carter itinery) seemed relieved that the traveling television special didn't come their way. They have enough Carter human rights "specialists" crawling all over the place as it is. Favorable Climate All that Argentina really asks when it looks northward is a climate favorable for obtaining international credit so it can attract the investment money needed to continue its remarkable comeback. That and purchases of military and police equipment. But" the Carter human rights people (with an assist from U.S. Ambassador Raul Castro in Buenos Aires) continue to reassure the Argentine government to let suspected terrorists out of jail. One way they are doing this is to block U.S. export licenses for sales of everything from police pistols to radar systems. The carrot and big stick approach. The bottom line may be that Argentina will end up buying these things from France or Britain. So much for the balance of trade. The Carter moral equivalent of imperialism is also alive and well in Africa. There, where Andrew Young is campaigning furiously to make Rhodesia safe for the terrorist leaders Nkomo and Mugabe. President Carter treated us to the rich irony of launching a verbal human rights assault on Southern Africa's white governments while his hosts, the military dictators of Nigeria, beamed their ap proval. Meanwhile, the Russians, Vietnamese, Cambodians, and Castro's Cubans need have nothing to fear from the Carter human rights campaign. Since the folks in those countries have so few rights of any kind, the whole subject is irrelevant. Impaired speech is quite often a result of stroke. Nancy Livingston, speech clinician with Easter Seal and coordinator of Stroke club. emphasizes that Stroke club is designed to try to get victims of stroke back into the main stream of life and to meet with other victims to discuss similar problems. Anyone who has suffered from a stroke is a potential member and is more than welcome. It is not necessary to be engaged in speech or physical therapy at Easter Seal center to join the club. Involuntary seclusion is a problem with any long term infirmity. Outings are a key aspect with Stroke club. Socialization is important to stroke victims, it shows them that they can have a social life. Families are always en couraged to attend the meetings. Not only is it im portant for victims of stroke to meet and observe how others have adapted to its disabling effects, it is equally important for other members of the *; family. Stroke club serves to,j disseminate information to the . family. Stroke club meets the last Friday of every month at the Easter Seal Therapy center, 708 Washington street,* Woodstock. A properly designed and operated septic system is a perfectly acceptable method of sewage disposal. It should provide a long period of service to the home owner. Persons living on a septic system, however, do need to realize that they are living on a septic system and not on a public sewer. A leaking faucet or a leaking valve in a flush box can overload the system very rapidly and cause it to fail. If automatic clothes washers and dishwashers are used in the home, an effort should be made to use them when a full load is needed to be washed rather than washing with several partial loads. Cigarette butts, gum, paper towels, sanitary items, newspapers, wrapping paper, disposable diapers, rags, sticks, and similar materials must not be flushed down the toilet and into the septic system. Although a septic tank normally does not require pumping for about 3 years, it should be inspected annually to determine if it needs to be pumped. The home owner should make an effort to prevent large amounts of grease from being discharged into a septic system. Backwash from water sof teners should be excluded from the septic tank especially if the disposal field is installed in a clay type of soil. The use of septic tank ad ditives such as enzymes or yeasts is not required and according to the U.S. Public Health Service none of these additives have been found to be advantageous in the septic system. The location of the seepage field should be known by the home owner so that trees or shrubs are not planted over the field since the root system of such vegetation does grow into and clog the drainage fields. Also, heavy equipment should not be run over the area of the seepage field since it will cause compaction of the soil and may cause breakage of the seepage tile lines. Grade Incentive Offer For Students At MCHS Hundreds of students at McHenry high school East and West campuses are being treated to free tickets to Chicago White Sox games. Under a cooperative arrangement among the White Sox, Chicago Tribune, and McHenry high school, students who earn a straight "A" average or who have a perfect attendance record for any marking period are eligible to receive four free tickets to a White Sox game of their choice. Over 600 students have so far qualified for the award. At West campus 200 seniors and 210 juniors have qualified by either grades or attendance in the first three quarters of the" school year. Awards for fourth quarter will be made after the close of the school year. East campus has honored ninety-two sophomores and ninety-nine freshmen for their performance during the first semester. Third quarter awards will be made shortly. McHenry high school is one of .. hundreds of high schools in the Chicago area which par ticipated in the incentive program. Students who qualify may choose two games from a list of twelve which are offered. They will then receive two general admission tickets for • each of the two games. Wheelchair Day May 13 Access Barrington Wheelchair day sponsored by the Advocates for the Han dicapped, will be held Satur day, May 13 (rain date May 20) from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the village of Barrington. . Village officials and other members of* the community will participate by substituting wheelchairs for functioning limbs in an effort to expose the existence of architecural barriers. Participants will form into three member teams consisting of a simulated handicapped person, an aid, and a representative from the League of Women Voters who will keep a log of problems encountered during the demonstration. The simulated handicapped person, assisted by team members, will attempt to accomplish a series of tasks performed with ease by the average mobile person. Such tasks will include purchasing postage and using a public telephone-everyday chores which are based on the assumption of physical mobility. Once the teams have finished their assignments, the groups will meet for an informal luncheon and press conference to discuss their impressions of the difficulties encountered in their exercise. The purpose of Access Barrington - Wheelchair Day is to increase the awareness of the obstacles that face the handicapped on a day-to-day basis. Access Barrington-Wheel chair Day is unique in that other communities have had Wheelchair Bays but without requesting the par ticipants to perform and record their success or failure to complete each task. Further information can be obtained by writing Advocates for the Handicapped, 2200 Merchandise Mart, Chicago, 111., 60654. Eggs Coagulate Remember that eggs coagulate between 149 and 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Excessive heat and overcooking toughens the white of an egg It may also cause a green discoloration between the white and yolk of a hard cooked egg--which is harmless but may be unappetizing.
