CLOSE LOCAL BEACHES Water samples collected from swimming beaches by the McHenry County Department of Health May 29 and 30 were obtained from several beaches on the Fox river and from some of the lakes in the county. Those beaches at which there were two consecutive unsatisfactory samples and which the department will be posting as unsafe for swimming include West Shore Beach, McCullom Lake, and City of McHenry, Fox river. The department recommends that persons refrain from swimming for two to three days following a heavy rain. Public Aid Abortions The Illinois Department of Public Aid will pay for medically necessary abortions for its clients performed on or after May 19, as a result of an order from the Federal District court. A law passed in the General Assembly last session prohibited the department from paying for abortions unless necessary to save the mother's life. The court's ruling found that law un constitutional. The Public Aid department is appealing that ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals, according to a departmental announcement May 24. Weyde David Mark Williams Blaine B. Wolf Health Tip If you are Irish, British, Scandanavian or of Northern European decent, soaking up too much sun may lead to skin cancer. So the advice of the experts is to use a good sun screen. "Fair-skinned people run a greater risk of skin cancer if they chronically expose themselves to the sun," ac cording to Virginia Weiss, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Illinois Medical center Chicago. "Chronic sun exposure also wrinkles and ages the skin more rapidly," Dr. Weiss added. "Sun screens offer good protection, but some fair- skinned people who use them can still get burned." The sun screens that offer the best protection are those products that contain PABA (Para-aminobenzoic acid). "PABA is very good at ab sorbing the burning rays of the sun," Dr. Weiss said. "One can still tan with PABA, but very slowly." Even with the use of sun screens, Dr. Weiss suggests that fair-skinned people avoid prolonged sun exposure from u p.m. to 3 p.m. That is when the sun's rays are most damaging. That old beach standby, baby oil, is no help whatsoever to the fair-skinned sunworshiper, she warns. "Baby oil offers no protec tion, and may even cause a heat rash," Dr. Weiss noted. Developing a tan can help people avoid the damaging effects of the sun, according to Dr. Weiss. The dark pigment of the skin, melanin, absorbs the sun's ultraviolet light and prevents burning. "Naturally dark pigmented people, especially blacks, have very little risk of developing skin cancer," Dr. Weiss noted. "Because of melanin, the sun cannot as easily penetrate to the center layers of skin and damage or age the skin as it can for fair-skinned people." If you fail to take precautions and do get a sunburn, cool compresses, lotion# and light creams have the most soothing effect, Dr. Weiss said. "Avoid using heavy creams or Vaseline," Dr. Weiss war ned. "They are painful to apply and actually hold the heat in the skin. "Certain topical anesthetic spray products provide tem porary relief from pain," she added, "but they may also cause a rash and increase the HOLD MCHS COMMENCEMENT (Continued from page 1) Stan Burlack, representing the American Legion, presented the American Legion award for character and scholarship to Scott Truckenbrod. son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Truckenbrod, and Mary Heritage, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Heritage. The American Legion awards were presented to Tim Gibbons and Philanne Scully; the Kiwanis awards to Cindy Gunderson and Doug Maris; nonor student award was given to Donna Chesler by 1978 class president, Doug Maris. A few surprises took place during the evening. The class of '78 presented awards of their own, to teachers, Fred Reed and Mary Cooper, in recognition of their hard work and help in the past years. The varsity chorus surprised vocal teacher, Mona Brown, who is leaving the school this year, with a song dedicated to her, "You Light Up My Life". Diplomas were given to the graduates by Jay Cristy, secretary of the board of education, in the absence of board president, S.L. Ruggero, M D. Following the benediction by Rev.
