In the entire United States, only 5,000 youths are accepted for the program in the 16-19 age group. Donald will be a sophomore at Marian Central high school next fall.__^^__ . It's easy to make promises. Among the other eighth graders from our area to graduate were, Tracy Garbacz, Pamela Skelton, Andre Yerkes, Kathleen Dyrbin, Karen Sexton, Michael Sexton, Colette Whipper, Bridgett Heald, Carol Martin, Scott Schmidt, Frank Massheimer, Charles Neeley, Patricia Withrow, Michael Nejedly, Ronald Nelson, and Jeff Cook, Belinda Craig and Steve Walker. Excitement, challenges, frustrations, friendships, fears, knowledge, await you all the next four years. What you experience is your very own, for all your lifetime. BON VOYAGE England: to be visited, studied and enjoyed for nine whole weeks. Maribeth Karas' anticipation of this study program is finally a reality as of Thursday, June 6, when her flight leaves for Gatway air port, London. She and the other members of the Wheaton in England program, will be staying in London for two weeks, where studies in medieval literature, post-1700 English literature, and English drama will begin. What excitement to be able to visit the actual places where these writings originated. Then there will be seven weeks in Oxford, at St. Anne's college, with two three-day excursions to South and North Wales. After the nine-week study course is completed, Maribeth will have ten days to tour in Europe, principally Germany. In addition to all the schooling and touring, Maribeth will also be ren dezvousing with Johnsburgite, Christian Goetschel, who is stationed in London in the Air Force! God speed,. dear Maribeth. Enjoy and absorb to the fullest. SUMMERTIME School is over for the sum mer, so the bicyclists, the walkers, the runners-out-into- the-streets, will be all around us. A word of caution to the drivers: be aware of humanity on the streets. Summer should be a time for fun, not for pain and regret. CELEBRATIONS Anniversaries are "in" this week. Les and Barbara Nejedly and Delbert and Karen Douglas celebrate their wedding dates June 8. The anniversary of Mary and Lonnie Wilson, Sr., is Jilne 9, and James and Marsha Antol's is June 12. June 14 is the day that Marlin (aka Dick) and Cheryl Mumma gave their vows to each other. Love is not only the touching, but also the reaching out. Do both and have a joyous year. Happy birthday wishes go to Troy Foss June 11, and Frankie Neeley, our budding artist, June 13. WELCOME? SECTION 2 - PAGE 7 - PI AINDF A LER-WEDN KSDAY JUNE 7.1»78 Twice Told Tales Sssss nFIETY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 7, 1928) Mrs. Samantha Rorer Button of McHenry, nearly 98 years old, with one other, is the last of the Civil War mothers now drawing a pension from the United States government, although the war ended sixty- three years ago. Seated in the pleasant home of Mrs. Culver on Waukegan street in this city, where Mrs. Button now makes her home, this kindly little woman dreams of her soldier boy who marched away to war in February, 1864, never to return. She gave her 16-year- old boy, Private Clinton D. Rorer of Company H, Eighth Illinois Cavalry, to her country, and about four months later on June 5, 1864, he died of typhoid fever in a hospital at Camp Relief at Washington, D.C. The four McHenry boys, William Vales, Albert Vales, Anthony Schneider and Ralph Justen, who have been at tending the Jasper college academy at Jasper, Ind., this year, will return to their homes next week. The boys have been very busy during the last few weeks with their college work and music. The Jasper college band won second place at the contest at Bloomington, 111. FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 16, 1938) Fishermen, grab your poles and run-Pistakee Bay, Pistakee Lake, Meyers Bay, Nippersink and Fox Lake are full of money. "Oscar", "Fanny", and all the other eighty-two little fishes (or maybe we shouldn't say little) are swimming around in those waters. And believe you me, they're not ordinary fishes- they're worth money. Especially "Oscar" and "Fanny" cute things, but still more beautiful and enticing are the tags they wear. One is worth $1,000 and the other $500. A total of $12,750 has been realized from the sale of eighty- five liquor licenses in the county, the report of the license committee presented to the county board Monday af ternoon. So I Hear was on his honeymoon according to a letter he wrote to his boss, "Mose", from Omaha, Neb. "Bacon's Strip" appeared again on the sport page with advice to "So I Hear". Representing the Chamber of Commerce, Floyd Covalt presented the organization's gift for scholastic attainment to Patsy Goranson, daughter of the George Goransons of Mc- Cullom Lake. Honored Wednesday of this week on the occasion of his fiftieth year in the priesthood was Rt. Rev. Msgr. C.S. Nix, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church, McHenry, for the past thirty-two years. The day's activities began with a Mass read at 10:30 in the presence of His Excellency, Most Rev. John J. Boylan, bishop of Rock- ford. Following the Mass, a large group of parishioners gathered at the new Grotto of the Blessed Mother, which was erected by the parishioners in memory of their beloved pastor. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of June 12, 1968) The McHenry Plaindealer has employed the Edwards Circulation company to con duct the circulation campaign which is announced in the newspaper today. This is an old firm, well recommended by publishers and press associations in many states Here to conduct the campaign are Glenn and Gladyce Ed wards and Pearl and Shirley Williams. City of McHnery police are preparing for a drive to determine the number of vehicle owners who have not purchased 1968 city vehicle licenses. Licenses were due Jan 1. The city grants two months' time for owners to secure their licenses, then a penalty of fifty cents per month starts on the first day of March. Sample copies of the Plaindealer will go to every boxholder in the McHenry, Wonder Lake and spring Grove areas on Wednesday of this week, a total of 14,000 in all. Training Project A $600,000 training and employment project for wards of the state was announced during May by Director Margaret M. Kennedy of the Illinois Department of Children and Family services (DCFS). The new program is funded by the federal government. It will help teach state wards how to find and hold jobs and will include training in various vocational and technical skills. Public Hearings The Illinois Environmental Protection agency will hold public hearings June 15 in Springfield to obtain comment from Illinois residents on future state environmental control plans.
