Tom For anyone interested by the roles women play in society, McHenry County college has a course to give a new per spective The course. Studies about Women, was recently approved by the state of Illinois to be taught tor the tirst ume this fall. "It's an interdisciplinary course which helps round out your education and gives you needed information you might not get in other college cour ses." explains instructor Mary Kurtzman Much of the class work will involve lectures by other MCC instructors and by community leaders who will cover such topics on women and their relation to the theatre, sociology, literature, theology, the arts, psychology, music and health • This isn't just a course for women." Ms Kurtzman said. "Men need the same in formation about women .that women need about women Most men have a close relationship with some woman in their lives, and this course will help them think about that relationship^ and their own sex role conditioning," she said The course will also include some excellent films on women and will give students a chance to sample" many of the in structors at MCC," according to Ms Kurtzman The course is a freshman level class which meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 at MCC. It is listed under philosophy, but counts as an humanities elective credit and can be transferred to an university for credit towards a bachelors degree • ^ "it's a guuu iniruduciivn iu college for someone returning to school, but it's also a chance to get a different perspective for students already enrolled," Ms. Kurtzman continued. The course is part of a new women's program at MCC which will include new em phasis in some courses already offered at the college along with this course and another offered Spring semester analyzing literature written by women MCC has a policy of equal opportunity in admissions, employment, educational programs and activities. The policy is carried out in the new women's program by offering nine courses for credit and nine adult education seminars during the year to meet the needs of women. Registration for all fall courses is now in progress. Fall classes start the week of Aug 26. • • • • 4 Courtesy on the high ways, by those driving automobiles, will reduce - the death rate more than traffic regulations. , by JOSKPII COOLS stuf f />s vclwlogist _ newt from th« Family S«vic« »ixt Mtnt.l «•#•* Clinic of McMwwy County (Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry county readers Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health center staff. This article is "Coping With Surgery-Prior to the Operation ") In a society where heart transplants, brain surgery, and restructuring of major organs have become everyday oc currences* physicians sometimes lose sight of the fact that to an individual patient, his surgery, whether major or minor, takes on the prope-tions of a major crisis. To the patient, the fact that a particular procedure has a "99 percent chance of complete success" means nothing "It is my body that is being cut by your knife, it is me that is going under the anesthetic, not a statistic." Fear of surgery is an universal experience in all patients. The fear is not necessarily in proportion to the seriousness of the surgery either. A relatively minor procedure may well evoke the same fear of death or mutilation more realistically DEIIIIOUORS MERCHANTS ^Lm OF FINE WINES AND UQUO 4610 W. The best way to do this is to find out from the physician, not from well meaning friends, exactly what is being done and why. At times the physician may only be able to answer to the best of his knowledge, as it is often impossible tc tell exactly what the^jroblem is until the actual operation, but most physicians realize that a great deal of fear can be alleviated by sharing with the patient the full extent of his knowledge about, the problems and the procedure Armed wiUi as full knowledge as is possible, it is then usually helpful to talk to someone who can be trusted about the fear itself. This does not mean talking at length with someone who in essence is saying nothing but "there, there, everything will be alright." Talking to someone about the feeling of fear means exactly that; finding someone who can understand what fear feels like and not be frightened himself, for that can only serve to in crease the fear and anxiety in the patient. These are ways of dealing with some of the anxiety of facing surgery no matter how major or minor. A certain amount of anxiety as the moment of surgery approaches is inevitable, but does not have to be devastating Talk to your doctor, get as much in formation as you can, then talk to someone who can understand your apprehension Next After Surgery Security; American Family's Special Homeowners Package Policy.
