Some residents of the area previously resided in com munities where the ambulance service was provided by fire departments This is not the case in McHenry. the McHenry Area Rescue squad is a separate, non-profit cor poration that depends on contributions for its expenses, and therefore does not use your tax money Each vear that the Rescue squad has operated i since 1971) the number of calls has in creased each year As the number of member responses to calls increases, so does the time that each member must contribute to the squad. If we do not control the non emergency calls, many members may find they can no longer afford the time involved in uic ovjuau o vpvi auvuo. Another important factor is the number of times the squad is already on a call and another call comes in before the first is completed. If the first call is not a true emergency and the second one is, the delay caused by having to complete the first call can be crucial to the real emergency call It is im perative that the emergency crews, vehicles and equipment at all times be free to respond promptly to emergency calls. The delay could cost someone's life. Perhap? it would be in order to explain what some non emergency calls are: Patient strains back working i^ garden over weekend. Does not seek treatment. By mid-week back is worse, calls rescue squad. This is NOT an emergency. No treatment can be given by the rescue squad, transportation by private ambulance, car or taxi is indicated. Patient is under doctor's care, calls doctor and com plains of feeling worse Doctor says better come in for check up. Calls rescue squad This is not an emergency, the only thing required is transportation which should be private am bulance, car or taxi. Patient has appointment to be admitted to the hospital Calls rescue squad. This is not an emergency If the rescue squad ' would transport this patient the patient would first go through the emergency room as the rescue squad does not take patients directly to hospital rooms This would incur a needless additional charge for the emergency room. Again, private am bulance, car or taxi should be used If there is no serious injury or life threatening situation if no treatment by the rescue squad is required, if transportation is the only thing necessary, we regret that we will be unable to accommodate you. We simply have to concentrate on the many emergency calls we receive. Requently we are requested to take a patient to a health care facility other that the McHenry hospital emergency roonv Our charter prohibits us from doing this and we cannot spare an emergency vehicle and crew for the length of time it takes to drive out of town and back. If it is an emergency, we will take the patient to the McHenry hospital emergency room for treatment and stabilization, he can then be transferred elsewhere by private ambulance For the McHenry Area Rescue squad to continue to provide a high level of emergency service to the public, the cooperation of tire public will be necessary. (Notes When you see a private vehicle with a flashing blue light, it is a volunteer answering an emergency call. Please pull over and yield the right-of-way and extend the same courtesy you would show to an emergency vehicle with flashing red lights Someone is in trouble and needs help, please help the people that are responding to that call. Want to join the squad9 If you are between 21 and 55, live close enough to answer calls and have first aid experience or are willing to take training write McHenry Area Rescue Squad, Box 484, McHenry 60050, for application. MCHENRY POIJCE DEPARTMENT Tlie ' McHenry Police department, working in close relationship with the McHenry Rescue squad and other emergency service units in the area, is in a, continuous program Nor upgrading its expertise in > servicing emegency aid demands. *•- Police officers in mosl in stances are first on the scene in accident or other emergency aid type calls. This does demand that whatever aid the police officer first renders he injured must cO-relate with the aid to be administrated by the Rescue squad personnel. It is well known that the aid ad ministrated in the first minutes could very well be the most important. The importance of a close working relationship can also be seen in the event of a natural or man-made disaster In either disaster, organization and implementation of prior * planning demands total ' cooperation from all units if the 1 job is to be done arid done well. Members of the community 1 must also share in the ' responsibility of cooperation especially with the Rescue squad. This unit is for ' emergency aid arid is not meant to be an ambulance service Heart attack and accident victims cannot be • aided if the squad has been called for a ride to a doctor's ' office. J _ .
