"Our country began with a tax revolt in 1776," said Patrick Quinn, Coalition spokesman, who used the weekend for a major petition campaign. Quinn urged voters to sign and pass the group's petition to put the Property Tax Freeze Referendum on the November ballot. The referendum calls for the legislature to "freeze property taxes in Illinois until the property tax burden on owner- occupiers and renters is reduced by 25 percent " "The best way to get a message through to politicians is through the ballot box," Quinn said. "Politicians follow the election returns and they understand the language of votes. > "The Property Tax Freeze referendum provides a con crete way for millions of Illinois voters to demand property tax control and make it an issue in the November elections. "For too long, citizens have been faced with taxation without adequate represen tation by elected officials. It's time for taxpayers to stop delegating their citizenship and start petitioning." . The Coalition must gather 625,000 signatures by Aug. 21 to put the advisory referendum on the November ballot. Quinn said that initial reaction to the three-week-old petition drive has been over whelming. » "We have already collected 55,000 signatures and received more than 3,200 petition requests from across the state," Quinn said. "Seventy-five percent of Illinois citizens pay more than four percent of their annual incomes in property taxes "That's just not fair and it's time that the Genera) Assembly heard about it. The Property Tax Freeze referendum will tie together all the local tax protests into one statewide voice " Quinn said anyone interested in passing Tax Freeze petitions may write the Coalition at 28 Madison.
