Twice Told Tales FIFTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 5, 1928) There are many and varied ways of making a living in this ever changing world of ours, but the latest thing in McHenry and perhaps the most unusual method of obtaining a livelihood is that of stealing, junk. Such was the case when a questionable character was caught stealing junk from the former blacksmith shop owned by Adam Ibsch. Since Mr. . Ibsch had discontinued his work at the shop, which is located just west of the railroad tracks, the place had been rented to a junk dealer and used as a storehouse for the various materials collected by him. The owner had known for some time that much of his stuff was being stolen. On Monday night Marshal Jack Walsh received a tip that someone was in the building and armed with a double barrel shotgun. "Mr. Walsh, ac companied by a few others, went to the storehouse where they found a man busily throwing pieces of junk into a truck Samuel Mocartis, 26. a member of the Hinck's flying circus which showed in Woodstock Sunday, was killed in the afternoon's show at the fairgrounds while taking part in one of the motorcycle races on the program FORTY YEARS AGO i Taken from the files of July 14, 1938) The Road and Bridge com mittee of the County board made it clear in its report to the County board that the com mittee is not in favor of trying to use the county's share of the state gasoline tax to help finance the reconstruction of some dozen bridges damaged by the flood waters of two weeks ago The committee recommended to the board that the road program to be financed by gasoline tax funds t*> kept going and that no part of the gas tax money be used to help rebuild bridges There is a legal point whether it would be lawful to use the gas tax money to rebuild bridges or not It is doubtful whether the gas tax money could be placed in the county fund for this purpose or even applied on the retirement of a bond issue The Misses Lola and Wanda Jepeen, daughters of Mr and M^HJeppe Jepsen of ,John- Tburg^were guest artists at the % WLS Prairie Farmer radio station, July 9. This was their first occasion to sing on a large broadcast. The young ladies sang a western song to guitar accompaniment. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of July 9, 1953) A recent annual audit report by the firm of J.W. North and Co. revealed that the city had concluded the past fiscal year in a healthy if not robust, financial condition. After all bills were paid, the city had a balance of $1,123.07 in the General fund. This might be considered playing close to the line, but encouragement was offered in the fact that many cities found it necessary to resort to anticipation warrants in order to meet their obligations. In mentioning a fast-growing community, one substantiates the statement through a check on building permits issued during the month of June. Eleven permits were issued for various classes of construction with a total estimated valuation of $170,000 In spite of extremely heavy traffic through McHenry over the holdiay weekend and crowds gathering at beaches to escape the heat, the com munity's holiday celebration was without accidents Throughout the entire state, at least ten people were killed in traffic mishaps and five drownings were reported The Johnsburg Tigers lost two ball games over the weekend and went from one extreme to the other in run- scoring In a great pitching duel between Willie Klapperich and Joe Jackson, the Tigers dropped a 3 to 1 decision at Woodstock Then the Tigers went up to Spring Grove for a Sunday game that turned into a 40-run ball game Spring Grove had the best of the plate- crossing marathon, 22 to 18 TEN YEARS AGO «Taken from the files of July 12, 19681 The McHenry County Sheriff's department reported the theft of highly dangerous fireworks from the display at the McHenry American Legion carnival over the Fourth of July weekend.
