Whether a speedboat, a cruiser, or just a rubber raft, the above foursome found the July fourth holiday as a great day for touring the McCullom Lake area. STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAYLORD Farmer's Almanac finally escaped with the victory Tina Olson from McHenry Trophies was the player of the game She hit a homerun and made the best defensive play of the night by tagging out a runner on third Wooden Nickel Hammers Oak Park. 19-4 Wooden Nickel overcame an early Oak Park lead and used a balanced batting attack featuring 4 homeruns to beat Oak Park. 19-4 in six innings, June 20 Oak Park scored first as Connie Lobrillo tripled in a run after one was out in the first , but she was left stranded as Chris Collett and Marie Falcone of Wooden Nickel caught line drives to end the inning In the third. Wooden Nickel sent 12 batters to the plate and put the game on ice Julie Oeffling's fourth homerun of the season, a 2-run blast, was the big hit of the inning Oak Park started to rally in their half of the inning, but the rally was snuffed out by a Sue O'Heir-Chris Gade double play. In the fourth, the pair showed their offensive skills as well, with O'Heir hitt ing a homerun and Gade a triple For the game, O'Heir was 4 for 5. with 4 RBI's. Gade added a homerun in the fifth, to top off a perfect 4 for 4 night Chris Collett helped the Nickel cause with her first homerun of the season in the fifth inning Our first experience in going to the County Fair was a surrey ride to Woodstock Of course, a pony ride followed Then came the machine age and a ride in a Model T I 'm not too proud of Sox fans who boo Richie Zisk every time he comes to Comiskey Park After all . he went where the money was waiting for him The Boo-birds have their right sporting or not But. when some goof threw firecrackers at Richie when he went out to play left field Monday night it was sport smanship at i ts lowest Jimmy Pearsall s appraisal and reaction was best when he pointed out that Zisk or any other player could be injured- for life by such fool actions Then. I gloried in Jimmy's remark. If I was sitt ing next to the guy who threw that firecracker I d hit him right in the mouth He would too Heard a down to earth speaker this week talk about taxes and spending He warned that California' Proposal 13" could spread in one form or another He also warned against governmental units being committed to projects on the basis of federal money that might be cut off, leaving somebody in a sweat Maybe such things will never happen It pays to l isten though For my part. L. "Buck Rogert What do you wear when you go fishing? I have a stack of mail on the sub ject. and most of the letters are se rious inquiries. So. let 's chat about fishing attire. U The selection of outdoor togs depends somewhat on where you're fishing, how you go about it . and, to some degree, the fashion trend of the area. If you're invited to fish a trout or salmon stream in Europe I would suggest a baggy tweed suit , and a Summer Health Tips You Can Help Keep Our W aters Clean " but (Indians) know that land came from the Great Spirit, was as endless as the sky. and belonged to no man And they know that man is the steward of the land " Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, by Dee Brown "And of the Water" could be added to that quote of a Pemaquid Indian named Samoset who aided the first Massachusetts settlers Neither Samoset nor his tribesmen could have foreseen the dense population of the attractive lands around American lakes and rivers or the ongoing struggle to halt pollution 350 years later Every year, more and more people want to boat and fish and swim in the waters near their homes All these activities can co-exist in reasonably clear, bacteria free water if the sailors, fishermen and swimmers are stewards of the land where they live "Just toss that bag of gar bage in the river, Steven The water will carry it away We don't want to drag all that home just to get rid of it " If enough people used the lakes and rivers as traveling garbage heaps, the water would be hopelessly polluted in a little while Help to keep water quality high by approved methods of disposing of waste - place garbage in designated containers or take it home "When you want to use the bathroom, come and tell me, Darlene Big girls always use the toilet " Teach children to use the sanitary facilities provided for the public at most recreational water areas An adequate number of facilities is provided except for wild areas "I usually just throw the fish heads and offal back into the water-what the heck, the other fish will clean it up." Facilities are often provided for the disposal of fish wastes or they can be buried or taken home for disposal. A swimmer might not like to come face to face with a week old floating fish head "We always just dump our sanitary tanks out here beyond the harbor when we come in to tie up After a whole day out on the water, who wants to wait in line to dump a sealed tank9 Marinas are required by law to provide adequate facilities for the collection and disposal of sewage from sealed tanks Boat owners' responsibilities to cooperate by the correct methods of disposal are clearly set forth Water samples are taken from nearly every beach in McHenry county every week and tested by the county Department of Health for total coliform count - bacteria that is brought to the water from the soil by run-off and fecal coliform county - the bacteria that is found in the digestive tract of a warm-blooded mammal Any time two samples have counts of more than 1000 coliform or 100 fecal coliform per 100 milliliters of water, that water is considered un satisfactory for swimming McHenry county citizens have a choice of sixty-three beautiful beaches and natural swimming areas to enjoy. When trolling for billfish in the tropics the well-dressed fish erman usually wears a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, ked deck shops, and dark glasses. Southern bass fish ermen are more flamboyant Many don a pink or purple jump suit which matches their pink or purple bass boats and wear a yellow base ball cap on their heads Fashion and personal choice are factors in the selection of angling attire, but from a practical standpoint comfort is the primary consideration A pair of fishing trousers, for in stance, should have plent> ot fanny room for sitting in a boat, hiking along a stream-side trail, or hunk ering around a campfire in the eve ning I like an expandable waist band and straight legs l.eave the models with flared bottoms at home, and select a length an inch or so shorter than your dress trousers Fabric should be cotton, or a cotton blend, because washability is a factor. Khaki or tan is a good color because it.is cool and doesn't show dirt as readily as other light colors 1 ishmg shirts should be equally cool and comfortable. I like the sports shirt style, which can either be tucked in or left out. and long sleeves are a must Remember, you can always roll sleeves up for com fort, but you can't roll em down to protect sun-burned arms if you don't have any. Again, fabric should be lightweight, washable, cotton. Color is a matter of per sonal choice When I grew up a man's "fishin' hat" was treasured possession and looked like it had been in the famil> for generations I ly fishermen, par ticularK, .still prefer these battered broad-bnrrimed relics because they provide protection from sun and rain: when soaked with enough repellent they discourage mosqui toes and black flies But, other an glers are now wearing durn near everything Best bet is one of the broad-brimmed poplin creations sold by outfits like Orvis and Bauer, because they are cool and provide adequate sun protection. I know cowboys who wear their clumsy boots in a fishing boat, and a minister who wades through mud and sand in last year's black leather preaching shoes." But they're in (he minority from every stand point, a pair of sneakers is the ideal fishing shoe and they should have non-skid soles to provide traction on slick rocks or slippery boat decks. Royal Red Ball, for in stance, makes a special canvas fishing shoe which is both practical and fashionable. Fvery angler's ensemble should also include a nylon windbreaker which can be rolled up and tucked away in a knapsack Equal priority should be given to a lightweight rain suit The latter garment is the best insurance against rain I know * VS lien fishing in the rain I slip a pair of rubber Totes over rryy sneakers to keep my feet dry When the weather is cold I don long un derwear and have a sweater handy But, there are exceptions to every rule or wardrobe Not long ago, for instance, I hopped a Bran iff jet and flew down to Tier-ra del Luego to do battle with the monster trout which inhabit these waters What did you wear fishin' down there"" a friend asked when I re turned My reply: •"Every dum thing in the suitcase'" NE Of THE BEST YOUNG ARMS IN BASEBALL BELONGS TO THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES' STAR Larry Christenson * HE PEALLV SPARKLED IN '77 WHEN HE WON 19 AND LOST ONLY 6, IN 222 INNINGS OF AAOUN D WORK, 23 - YEAR OLD LARRY, WITH A WORLD OF STUFF, WON 14 OF HIS LAST 15 GAMES-THE LOSS WAS I'O, 7V HOUSTON.
